Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and the six largest in the nation in terms of job density; it has a total population of just over 313,000 residents, with a greater metropolitan area population of over 2.4 million. Its downtown district maintains a healthy business sector and ranks 25th in the nation in terms of job growth. While the city was built on the steel industry, recent changes have steered the city away from industry and more toward service-based jobs.
The city was originally named after Fort Pitt, which was the site of much contention and fighting during the first part of the 18th century; however, once control was established (by the British), the village of Pittsburgh began to flower, and after the American Revolution was renowned for its many factories and jobs.
It was a huge help during the Civil War, giving not just men and supplies but helping keep the economy flowing through its many mills and factories; this trend of industrialization continued through the 20th century, and much of what makes Pittsburgh what it is today is because of the steel industry.
Today, however, steel is falling out of sorts with the people of the city, and more service-based jobs have taken over – it is the leading city for healthcare, robotics, technological services and financial services in the state.
Summers in the city, like much of the rest of the state, are hot and muggy, while winters typically are cold and blustery. Average highs in the summer peak at around 85 degrees, while lows can drop to the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter months things cool down considerably, with average highs topping out around 40 degrees and lows frequently below freezing.
