Minot is a city in and the county seat of Ward County, North Dakota, and is the fourth largest city in the state. It is a major trading hub in northern North Dakota and is the principal city of the Minot Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Ward, McHenry and Renville Counties.

It was founded in 1886 by a railroad tycoon looking to build a railroad through the area. The city sprang up virtually overnight and in 1887 it was officially incorporated as Minot. It was named after a friend of the founder. It was known during Prohibition as a center for smuggling operations.

During the summer months temperatures in the city typically hit around 85 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping down to around 60 degrees or so overnight. During the winter months, however, temperatures often hit around 30 degrees during the day, with lows dropping down to around 5 degrees or so overnight.
