Fargo began life as a small rest stop for steamboats coming down the Red River during the 1870’s; it was officially founded in 1871. It grew slowly and was nearly destroyed in 1890 by a fire that ripped through the city, though it was quickly rebuilt using brick instead of wood. The city also made many civic improvements and today Fargo is known for having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
