The city was first founded in 1860 at the intersection of three different railroad lines, and due mainly to its location, the city boomed very quickly. The city was heavily reliant on goods coming from the trains that would stop at the city, but manufacturing was a large part of the city\’s growth and infrastructure, and that trend continues to this day. The city was all but destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War, but the city was rebuilt and many historic buildings remain standing, left over from this period.

The city lies in a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Typically temperatures during the summer months hover around 90 degrees, with lows dipping around 70; in the winter, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 60 degrees, while lows dip down to around 38.
