Lexington is located in the middle of Kentucky, and officially is named Lexington-Fayette Urban County, though Lexington is typically what it’s called. It’s population of 447,000 people makes it the second largest city in the state of Kentucky, and its combined Metropolitan Statistical Area population of 658,000 makes it one of the largest Metropolitan areas in the United States.
Founded in 1775 by a group of frontiersmen who were camping at the site of where the city currently sits. After hearing reports of the outcome of the battle of Lexington and Concord during the Revolutionary War, they named their camp after the battle.
The city planning and development was delayed for another four years due to the dangers of living in the middle of nowhere, but the city rapidly grew, and by 1820 was one of the wealthiest cities west of the Allegheny Mountains. Many historical figures visited or grew up in Lexington, including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, John C. Breckinridge – all important leaders during the American Civil War. Today the city is known for its diverse economy and manufacturing sector.
Like many cities in the Midwest, Lexington boasts a humid continental climate, and typically has four distinct seasons. During the summer months, temperatures hover in the upper 80’s during the day, dropping to around 65 or so during the night. During the summer, however, temperatures rarely get above 40 degrees, and average lows below freezing cause snowfall throughout much of the winter.
