Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Kentucky. The city is also the state capital of Kentucky and is actually the fifth smallest state capital in terms of population – its population was just 27,000 as of the official 2000 US Census. It is the principal city of the Frankfort Micropolitan Statistical Area which does include all of Franklin and Anderson County.

Frankfort was founded in 1786 after Kentucky became a state. In 1792 five different commissioners were appointed to pick a city for the new state capital and Frankfort came out the victor. During the Civil War the city was occupied by the Confederate army for some time, though no damage had been caused.
