Harrisburg is the seat of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and is the state capital of the state. It is the tenth largest city in the state with a population of just under 50,000; its metropolitan area, however, has a combined population of over 528,000, making it the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the state of Pennsylvania.

The city was first planned in 1785 with the first settlers arriving not too long after. The city quickly grew, and by the mid 19th century became a big stop on the Underground Railroad, where freed or escaped slaves would rest, feed and drink in the city before making their way to Canada.

The city was influential in the American Revolution, American Industrial Revolution, and the American Civil War, creating jobs and manufacturing supplies for the armies of the Union as well as creating new and better factories to give more people jobs. Today, the city is in the midst of an urban renewal project that has spanned the past twenty six years, and is still well into effect.

Summers in the city, like much of the rest of the state, are hot and muggy, while winters typically are cold and blustery. Average highs in the summer peak at around 85 degrees, while lows can drop to the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter months things cool down considerably, with average highs topping out around 40 degrees and lows frequently below freezing.
