Before the Second World War, Baltimore was a major manufacturing center; however, due to declines in manufacturing over the past thirty years, Baltimore has switched to a service-center economy, and as of 2007 had a little over 637,000 residents, and is the largest city in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, which has a combined population of 8.1 million residents.
Baltimore was created to help fuel the tobacco trade that was continually growing in the early 1700’s. It played a key part in the Revolution, including having a battle fought there, and during the 19th century the city grew with the addition of several rail lines. It was a complete transportation hub for the entire east coast, and today is a major commercial and industrial center, getting back to its roots some 100 years ago.
The city lies in a humid subtropical climate zone, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, blustery winters. July is typically the hottest month, with temperatures getting as high as 92 degrees, while dropping down to the low 70’s overnight. During the winter, temperatures peak at around 50 or so, with lows dropping around 29 degrees in the colder parts of the season.
