Covington is a city located in Kenton County, Kentucky, and is one of the county’s two seats. Covington is currently home to over 40,600 residents, making it the fifth-largest city in Kentucky. The city is located firmly in the Cincinnati, Ohio metropolitan area, which sits just north of the city. The city was once a minor shipping area, as it is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Covington has nineteen different neighborhoods, ranging in size from a few hundred people to upwards of ten thousand.
Covington was founded in 1814 when three men bought 150 acres from a man named Thomas Kennedy. The city was originally built on the back of industry; at one point, Covington was home to the largest iron fence maker in the world – that company, Stewart Iron Works, is still in operation today, and is the second-oldest iron company in continuous operation in the U.S. and the oldest manufacturing company in the city of Covington. The city was, at one point, working on getting its own professional baseball team; however, the population at the time could not support such a franchise, and the baseball team designated to Covington ended up moving to Kansas City.
Covington and Cincinnati share similar climates, as they are located literally across the river from one another. During the summer months, average highs in Covington tend to reach into the mid-to-upper 80’s, though triple-digit highs are not unheard of and the record high in the city is 108. Overnight lows during that same time tend to drop down into the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter snow is somewhat uncommon but not unheard of, with highs only reaching into the low-to-mid 40’s and overnight lows often dropping into the mid-to-upper 20’s.
