Eugene is the second largest city in Oregon (behind Portland) and is the county seat of Lane County, Oregon. Its population currently stands at just over 154,000, and is in contention with Salem, Oregon as the state’s second-largest city. The city is known for its great outdoors and recreational activities, activist political leanings, alternative lifestyles and, probably most famously, the Nike Corporation first started in the city.

It was founded in 1846 when founder Eugene Skinner built the first cabin in the area; not long afterwards, people on the Oregon Trail began to settle in the town and in 1850 the first cabin that Skinner built was converted into a post office and the town was incorporated.

The University of Oregon was built in the city, drawing jobs and business, not to mention people, and it continued to grow. However, during the late 1990’s the city was home to an anarchist group that had major dealings with the participants of the WTO riots in 1999, but after September 11, 2001 activity has died down considerably.

The city lies in the Marine West coast climate zone, marked by dry, warm summers and wet winters. Typical summer highs peak at around 80 degrees, while summer lows drop to around 50 or so; in the winter, these temperatures drop significantly, with winter highs only getting to around 54 or so, while winter lows drop to just above freezing.
