Bakersfield is a city in the San Joaquin Valley and is actually in Kern County, California, and it is located right in the middle between Los Angeles and Fresno. It is the 11th fastest growing city in the state of California, with a population of over 250,000. Recent estimates, however, put the city’s population at over 353,000, which would make it the 58th largest city in the United States in terms of population.

Bakersfield was originally known as Kern Island to the few people who had originally settled the area in 1860, though in 1869 the name was changed to Bakersfield after Colonel Thomas Baker. It was incorporated as a city in 1873 and in 1874 it replaced the old county seat, Havilah, as the county seat of Kern County. It was hit by and earthquake in 1952, and while damage was severe it has been repaired and Bakersfield is thriving once again.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 97 degrees during the day, with overnight lows often dropping to around 70 degrees. During the winter months temperatures cool down a bit, with highs often hitting around 55 degrees during the day and overnight lows dropping to around 40 degrees.
