Wichita is the most populous city in the state of Kansas, with a population (as of 2006) of 361,000.This also makes the city the 51st largest city in the United States, and is also the county seat of Sedgwick County in Kansas. Wichita was founded in 1863, mainly as a collection of grass huts and houses built by the Wichita Indians, and later on was a railhead for cattle drives from the Southwest.
During the late 1800’s, the city was known for its lawlessness, and in the early 1900’s was the site of Carrie Nation (of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union) and her crusade against alcohol. Industry boomed during the 20th century, and many aircraft manufacturers in particular call Wichita their home. Today, the city is well-known for its beautiful downtown and many parks and recreational centers.
Like most other cities in the Midwest, Wichita is home to a humid continental climate, with four distinct seasons year round. During the summer, temperatures typically hover in the mid-to-upper 80’s, while lows can drop down to around 64 degrees. In the winter months, snow is commonly reported, as highs rarely get above 40 and lows often drop below freezing.
