Tulsa is the second largest city in the state of Oklahoma (behind Oklahoma City) and is the 45th largest city in the United States. It is the principal city in the Tulsa Metropolitan Area and has a total population of just over 300,000. It is unofficially known as T-Town due to its name, and was heavily involved with the oil industry, but economic downturns and diversification has led to more high-tech jobs opening up in the city.
It was founded during the Oklahoma Land Run like most other cities in the state; in 1898 the city was incorporated and elected its first mayor. During the early 20th century the city boomed thanks to the oil industry and plenty of oil being drilled for in the city; however, the oil industry began to leave the city and it fell into disrepair.
During the latter half of the 20th century the city has experienced revitalization thanks to new, high-tech jobs opening up in the area and a much more diverse economy. The citizens of the city have also helped out, passing numerous bills the help with urban renewal, tourism and beautification of the city.
Tulsa lies in a temperate climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, but not as extreme as other regions. The average high temperature during the summer peaks around 90 degrees, while overnight lows hit around 70; during the winter months, highs can drop as low as 40 degrees, though average temperatures hover around 50. Lows during the winter drop to around 26 degrees in the heart of the season.
