Rapid City is the second largest city in the state of South Dakota as well as the county seat of Pennington County. The city was founded in 1874 after gold was discovered in the mountain range that splits the city in two; a town quickly grew around it, and the army, in the early 20th century, decided to build an army base on the outskirts of the city. The city benefited greatly from the addition of the base, and in the 1980\’s the economy bloomed even more with the addition of tourism and beautification projects designed to attract new residents.
