Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Cabell County, West Virginia, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 48,000. It is a principal city of the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area, and falls second only behind Charleston in terms of population; the MSA has a population of over 286,000.

It was founded in 1870 and was actually founded around Marshall College, which was founded in 1837. Two nearby towns were incorporated and both grew quickly, though Huntington eventually annexed the second city. It grew due to the college and coal mining, as many cities in West Virginia were, and today is now a medical town that helps the college as well, with most of the coal mines being closed.
