Daytona Beach is a city in Volusia County, Florida, located about 50 miles northeast of Orlando. It is currently home to a population of over 61,000 residents and sits as one of the principal cities of the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to close to 500,000 residents.
Daytona Beach is known for its hardpacked beaches, which were quickly turned into tourist fodder and also hosted some of the earliest automobile races, and today Daytona Beach, like many cities in Volusia County and in the surrounding metro area, is a major snowbird destination in the car shipping industry.
Daytona Beach was founded in 1870 and incorporated only six years later. It was named after Matthias D. Day, who helped found the city, and in 1886 the first railroad was built, connecting Daytona Beach to the rest of the world.
Though automobile racing has been a part of Daytona Beach’s history since 1902, it would not be until 1936 that the city would become famous for racing, as the first official stock car race was held in Daytona Beach during that year. With the founding of NASCAR in 1959, and the subsequent construction of the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach became a major destination for racers and fans.
Because of its location on the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures in Daytona Beach tend to stay a bit cooler than the rest of Florida. During the summer months the temperatures peak around 90 degrees, with lows often dropping to around 72 degrees overnight, though higher temperatures are by no means uncommon. During the winter months the temperatures hit around 70 degrees with lows dropping to around 50 overnight, making it a great area to spend the winter in on account of the cooler weather.
