Bridgeport is a city in as well as the largest city by population in the state of Connecticut, and is currently home to over 144,000 within the city proper. Bridgeport is the fifth-largest city in the New England region, and though it is the largest city in Connecticut it is still grouped into the Greater New York Combined Statistical Area, also known as the “Tri-State” region. Bridgeport also anchors the smaller Greater Bridgeport area, which is home to over 305,000 residents.
The city was first settled in 1659, and was originally named Stratford. Its reliance on fishing and farming marked it as a typical New England town, at least until the outbreak of the Civil War, when Bridgeport became a major weapons and munitions supplier for the Union Army. Since the late 19th century, Bridgeport has been known for its industry. Like many major manufacturing cities, during the latter half of the 20th century, Bridgeport slowly saw its industry fade away, which in turn brought economic hardship to the entire Greater Bridgeport area. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Bridgeport’s economy has been on the rise again, thanks mainly to a more diverse economy and a focus on service-based industry, and less reliance on just manufacturing.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Bridgeport tend to reach into the low-to-mid 80’s with overnight lows usually falling down into the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter months, temperatures drop severely; average highs during the day only reach into the upper 30’s and low 40’s, while nighttime lows can drop into the upper teens and low 20’s. Snow is fairly common, and as New England isn’t all that popular with auto transport companies during the winter as is, due to a lower popularity among customers, Bridgeport can be difficult and expensive to ship into or out of during the depths of the winter season.
