Tallahassee is a city in as well as the county seat of Leon County, Florida, and is also the capital of the entire state. It currently has a population of over 181,300 residents, and anchors the larger Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area, home to over 375,000 total residents.

Tallahassee today is known for its many colleges and high-tech businesses, with schools such as Florida State University and Florida A&M residing within its boundaries. It is also the home of several major defense contractors which bring in much of the city’s income, as well as many massive law firms, including the Florida Bar.

Hernando de Soto was the first European to pass through what is now Tallahassee, and the first Christmas celebrated on North America was celebrated about a half mile east of the border of the city. Established by Americans in 1824, Tallahassee grew slowly, though its status as state capital of Florida did encourage growth.

Railroads came to the town not long after, and during the American Civil War Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi River not captured by Union forces. After the end of the Civil War, Tallahassee’s economy slowed down due to slavery being abolished, and the gradual switch from an agricultural-based economy to a more diverse one.

Factories gradually moved south and east as the years wore on, a trend that continues to this day; however, with the establishment of Florida State University and Florida A&M, the city has grown more due to the high-tech jobs offered by companies looking to hire people fresh out of college, as well as jobs offered by the universities themselves.

Tallahassee is a typical Florida city, with hot, wet summers and cold, dry winters. During the summer months, it isn’t uncommon to see temperatures peaking in the mid 90’s, while during the night they can drop as low as 70 degrees (though typically not much lower).

During the winter, temperatures hover in the mid-60’s during the day, while normally lows dip into the lower 40’s. Tallahassee does not experience a lot of severe winter weather, and as a result is a popular “snowbird” location – residents of northern states will move down south and spend a few months in Florida, where the weather is more mild.
