The city was founded in 1797 by New York native John Young, who purchased the land from a holding company for just over $16,000. The city quickly grew in size with the finding of coal in the early 1800\’s, prompting its inclusion on the Erie Canal network; as such, the city continued to grow, but recent urban decay has left the city with a lower population than that in 2000. City officials are working diligently to revitalize the urban center, and urban renewal projects are in full swing.

Youngstown’s climate is moderated by the Great Lakes, and as such has what is called a lake-moderated continental climate. Average highs in the summer top out around 82, while overnight lows rarely drop below 60; during the winter months, however, things cool considerably, with average highs topping out around 34 degrees and overnight lows getting well below freezing, often dropping down into the teens.
