Auto Shipping by Region: The East North Central

Auto Shipping by Region: The East North CentralThe East North Central region is located around the Great Lakes of the United States and Canada. It is the home of five states – Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, and is one of the most prominent U.S.-census designated regions west of the Mississippi River. All five states in the region border one of the Great Lakes, which were and still are crucial to trade and economic prosperity and development in the Midwestern regions of the U.S. The largest city in the region is easily Chicago – it is the only city that has a population of over one million residents in the region, though The East North Central region has major cities such as Indianapolis, Columbus, Detroit and Milwaukee within its borders.

The transportation network within the East North Central region is quite sophisticated, considering it has some of the largest cities in the nation within it. It was necessary, too, that most of the major roadways in the U.S. run through the region, considering that Detroit is basically the home of the U.S. auto industry (three major manufacturers are headquartered in the Detroit metro area). Cities such as Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Fort Wayne, Rockford, Milwaukee, Chicago, and many others are (or were) major factory and manufacturing towns as well, and the fact that natural (and some man-made) waterways like the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean led to prosperity for many cities during the early and mid 20th century. Economic decline, deindustrialization and a massive economic shift toward retail and service jobs led to the drastic decline of the region.

When transporting a vehicle to or from the East North Central region your best bet will likely to do it during the summer months, when the weather is fair and there are more people moving around the country, whether it be just their cars or their entire homes. Winter weather in the East North Central can be brutal, particularly in January and early February, so auto shippers tend to avoid those areas at all costs to avoid hurting the loads on their trucks or their trucks in general. Major metro areas are likely going to be easier to ship to or from, but many areas of the region aren’t going to be hard to get to at all considering the myriad ways that people can get from one area to another – with all the large cities, and even their smaller cities can get pretty large, the East North Central is a region that many auto shipping customers move in and out of on a near-daily basis.
