Portland is a city in and the county seat of Multnomah County, Oregon. It is the largest city in the state in terms of population, with a 2008 estimate placing the population of the city at just over 575,000. It is also the 23rd most populous city in the United States. Portland is well-known throughout the country for its strong land-use planning techniques, its light rail mass transit system, and the Portland Trailblazers, the local professional basketball team.
Portland was originally founded on a section near the Willamette River called simply “the clearing;” William Overton saw great commercial potential and began a small town; it quickly grew to more than 800 inhabitants by 1851, its year of incorporation.
The city continued to grow thanks to strong land-use planning and urban improvements and was the major port in the Pacific Northwest until Seattle’s deep water harbor was connected via rail to the rest of the mainland. Though recently population growth has slowed, the city has experienced an urban renewal, thanks mainly to strong beautification and city planning projects.
Portland lies entirely within the Marine west climate zone (as does much of western Oregon), and it is characterized by warm summers and cool winters. Typical average highs during the summer months peak at 80 degrees, while typical lows drop to around 58 or so; during the winter, however, high temperatures of around 47 are normal, while lows close to the freezing point are standard.
