Winter Auto Shipping Tips
Looking to ship a car in December or January or February? Winter can be a pain of a time to ship a vehicle within, as many routes that carriers champion, particularly in the north, end up snowbound or covered in ice and other hazards that come with the cold. Winter auto shipping is typically slower along most major routes, but it’s also cheaper along those major routes as well. The biggest reason as to why? Well, it has to do with the fact that car carriers thrive on demand, and if the demand is scarce, there’s not going to be much freight, so the competition among carriers is a lot higher.
This is true along the most popular routes; prices along rural routes, or routes to and from cities known for snow and ice, may actually increase due to the lack of carriers. Auto shipping companies want to run routes to and from big cities, it’s true, and the bigger the city the more popular it tends to be in the auto transport industry. But some areas just don’t have the winter auto shipping demand they do during the summer, which can result in carrier companies migrating to more popular routes. These are subjective and constantly changing, so it’s not like we can sit here and give you a list of areas that you want to avoid (however, Minneapolis and Green Bay come to mind).
During the winter there’s quite a number of carrier companies, usually the smaller ones, that actually close up shop due to lack of demand on their preferred routes. This means there has to be other carriers to fill that demand, so they end up running more routes and picking up more freight, which can help keep winter auto shipping prices low. You’ll want to try to book earlier, though, as there are fewer carriers on the road and getting to you may take longer. This means that you’ll want to book at least two weeks out during late November, December, January, February and probably into early March, before the spring season kicks up.
