Who Can Use Enclosed Car Transport Services
If you want to get technical, anyone can use enclosed car transport services, so long as their vehicle can fit on the carrier. In the car shipping industry you can usually choose whether you want your vehicle to be shipped on an open carrier (the standard method) or via an enclosed carrier (optional). Most companies use open transportation as their standard because an open carrier can fit up to ten vehicles on a single truck, which means that they can charge each customer less because the costs are spread out among ten different customers. This means that they can offer more competitive pricing and thus keep their trucks full for longer stretches.
Enclosed car transport is different – most enclosed carriers can haul up to four vehicles in their specialized transportation trucks. As the word “enclosed” implies, enclosed transport trucks keep the vehicles they ship in an enclosed trailer, not too unlike the big semi-trucks that you see hauling goods around the country. Enclosed car transport services are not as common on the road today because fewer cars and trucks actually need it. The benefit of enclosed car transport lies in the added protection it gives your vehicle during transit. Things such as rocks, dirt and dust, and debris can all get kicked up off the highway while your vehicle is being shipped, and on an open carrier those things can get thrown up into the back and damage vehicles (it’s incredibly rare, though). Enclosed car transport prevents this from happening.
So who can use enclosed car transport services? While anyone can, technically, it’s much more expensive than standard shipping services on an open carrier, and it’s something that you’re going to need to think about. The vast majority of daily-driven vehicles can handle the “rigors” of open transport – we put rigors in quotation marks there because even on an open carrier a vehicle will be well-protected, because you have the whole cab of the truck, as well as all the struts and supports, as well as other vehicles, all surrounding yours. This means that damage is rare. With enclosed transportation being anywhere from 50-100% more than the cost of open, it’s typically reserved for vehicles that truly cannot see a dent or a scratch without losing a good chunk of value. Remember, vehicles depreciate for a long time from the moment they get off the lot; the only ones that are really protected from that are high-end luxury vehicles, rare or exotic cars, and antiques and collectibles. Those deserve the protection enclosed car transport provides – the rest, not so much.
