Right now is a great time to get free auto transport quotes to ship your vehicle. The new year is often one of the busiest times, as many people wait until after the holidays to book their shipment. Companies are gearing up for the rush, so make sure to book your auto transport services quickly to get ahead of the pack and also to get some great deals on your vehicle shipment today.

While today marks our Tip of the Day one year anniversary, we here at American Auto Shipping have been helping people transport their vehicles for over 15 years. This type of longevity is rare in this industry, as it’s fraught with turnover due to its competitiveness. When searching for an auto transport company, keep in mind that the longer a company has been in business, the more reliable they tend to be, so a good question to ask a rep is how long the company has been in business.

Today is one of the busiest days of the year for auto transport companies, as it’s the first Monday after Christmas and a lot of people are getting back on the horse in the industry. As such, demand is high today and will be until after New Year’s, with the demand usually peaking between January 2nd and January 5th. This can be a great time to get good deals on auto transport services, so don’t hesitate – fill out our form today for sweet deals.

If you filled out our free online form and have not received any quotes after about an hour, make sure to give us a call. We have a system in place that detects possible false information, such as fake e-mail addresses and telephone numbers, to catch the people filling out our form with no intention of shipping a vehicle. Weeding these types of quotes out is good for business and for the customers, but sometimes legitimate quote requests get rejected for various reasons. This is the main reason why people don’t receive their auto transport quotes; if you do not, give us a call and we’ll make sure you get them right away.

Please understand that you cannot have any illicit or controlled substances in the vehicle you are shipping with an auto transport carrier. This includes items such as alcohol or prescription drugs – they are controlled substances and cannot just go willy-nilly across the country. If you have anything in your car you should take it out first regardless of what it is, but especially if it’s something illegal or controlled. Do us all a favor.

We still have one more big holiday coming up – New Year’s Day – but now that Christmas is done and over with most companies are going to be getting back on the road fairly soon. New Year’s isn’t nearly as important to car transport drivers as Christmas Day is, which is why more companies will be running routes on the 1st of the new year than did on Christmas or even further back, in Thanksgiving. We are also open today, so if you have auto transport related questions don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Merry Christmas! Today is a day that the auto transport industry takes a break – as most industries do – in order to spend time with our loved ones and enjoy the holiday with our families and our friends. Most auto shippers will be closed today, so if you’re looking to get a hold of your representative and are only getting voicemail there’s a good reason as to why. Many companies will not reopen until Monday, but some will be open tomorrow, including us here at American Auto Shipping, so if you need quotes make sure to fill out our free form or give us a call.

Have questions about our services or how to go about getting free quotes? Make sure to give us a call at 800-930-7417 to discuss your shipping options with one of our live agents. Though we don’t ship your vehicle ourselves, we do get you quotes from companies that do, and our helpful auto transport representatives are standing by to answer your questions and help you get those quotes.

If you need quotes for enclosed auto transport services, make sure to mention that if you call to speak to a representative, and make sure to mention it when asked for the year, make and model of your vehicle. Once part one of the quote form is submitted, we can’t go back to the first page without resubmitting your information, so if you need enclosed quotes let us know before we go on to the contact portion of the auto transport quote form. This will save you a lot of time when gathering quotes and will also lead to more accurate quotes overall.

Remember, this week is Christmas, and many companies will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in order to give their employees time with their families. While some companies may be open, most all will be close at least on Thursday, so make sure to get your auto transport stuff squared away early, so you’re not stuck missing out on Christmas.

Shipping to or from Alaska or Hawaii? You need to be aware of the fact that overseas transportation services move much more slowly than traditional overland transport trucks. Because of this, it takes a lot longer for ocean freighters to get to their destinations, and any shipments to Alaska or Hawaii will usually end up taking a couple of weeks, depending on who you ship with and what type of cargo ship they use and how powerful it is.

When auto transport companies tell you that you can have a few light items in the trunk of your vehicle, what they really mean is that you can have a few lightweight items in the trunk of your vehicle only if it’s absolutely necessary. Additional weight is a risk you have to be willing to take – and if a truck is overweight you can say goodbye to anything that’s in your vehicle that’s not actually a part of your vehicle.

If you’re the type of person who likes to drink coffee or eat in their car, you want to make sure everything is out of your vehicle when your auto transport company comes to pick it up. They are not licensed to carry household items, and if you have even a travel mug in your cup holder you will have to remove it. Nitpicky, possibly, but infinitely better than your auto transport driver getting fined for hauling stuff he is not allowed to.

If you are unsure of whether or not your vehicle needs enclosed auto transport services, give us a call. Our representatives can discuss your shipment with you and give you advice on whether or not enclosed transportation is required. If you already know you want to ship enclosed, you can mark the “enclosed” button under the carrier selection portion of our auto transport quote form, to get exclusive enclosed auto shipping quotes emailed to you instead of standard open quotes.

Make sure you know how you’re going to pay for your auto transport services before you book them. If you are unable to pay your driver at delivery, they are allowed to hold your vehicle hostage – and threaten you with legal action – in order to get the money they are owed. Auto transport companies rely on customers making payment upon delivery in order to keep their trucks fueled and maintained, and if they can’t there’s no auto transportation industry. So make sure you have the means to pay for your shipment before it’s shipped, to avoid problems like this.

When you’re getting ready for your auto transport carrier to load your vehicle, do a double-check of the inside of your vehicle. There should be nothing visible inside your vehicle that is not a part of the vehicle; if you have things such as CD cases, cassette tapes, phone chargers, paperwork or even loose change, you’ll want to either get it out or put it in the glove box or center console, to ensure it’s out of sight when your auto transport carrier arrives.

It’s always a good idea to make sure your vehicle’s battery is charged before your auto transport company arrives to pick it up. Non-running vehicles have to be winched onto a truck, and not all carriers operate winches. If you can get your vehicle started and running well enough to drive onto the back of a truck, do it, and it’ll save you money on your auto transport services almost guaranteed.

If you’re considering putting items in the trunk of your vehicle while it is on the back of an auto transport truck, you’ll want to discuss how much you’re shipping and what you’re shipping with a live agent. The best way to get a hold of an agent is to fill out our online quote form and get multiple free auto transport trucks from top-rated shipping companies. Since they might have different policies regarding the movement of household items, they would be your best go-to for information regarding that.

Unsure of what type of auto transport carrier to use? You can call us toll-free to speak to one of our live agents who can help you decide what type of auto transport truck would be best for your specific shipment. With both open and enclosed services available to you, you’ll want to understand the nuances between the two, and if you’re unsure about them you can always call us up and ask or you can also read more on our blog as well as our articles about the subject.

Since you’ll be getting multiple quotes from different auto transport companies, if you’re unsure of when exactly you’re looking to ship you don’t need to worry about the specific date you put in under the “ship date” section of our form. This just lets those shippers know when you’re looking to ship, so if you need it picked up ASAP you can put down today’s date. If you’re not in a hurry, you can put a date a week or two from now. It’s not set in stone until you actually book with your shipper, and by then you’ll have actual dates for pickup and delivery. Until then it’s an estimate, so put what you want under there to give those auto transport companies an idea of when roughly you’re looking to have your vehicle picked up.

If the vehicle you are trying to ship is not listed in our online quote form, put in a vehicle of a similar size and weight. You’ll receive auto transport quotes that will likely be in the same range as the vehicle you are shipping, since much of your price is based on pickup and delivery locations and the size and weight of your vehicle. Once you get your quotes, you can talk to live auto transport agents about what vehicle you are actually shipping, and the rep you speak to can adjust your price over the phone right then and there if need be.

Unless you’re shipping on a shoe-string budget and aren’t pressed for time, it’s a good idea not to book with the lowest auto transport quote you get. Low prices can mean delays in pickup and delivery, since auto transporters prefer taking the highest-paying loads in an area first. Supply and demand determines which routes this applies to, and it’s ever-changing, so we recommend talking about it to an auto transport professional today.

Overseas auto transport is a bit more expensive and time consuming than standard shipping services, and Alaska is usually more expensive to ship to or from than Hawaii. Your shipping company will have to work with an overseas auto transport company as well, and this will usually increase wait times for delivery and increase transit time, due to the port-to-port nature of overseas shipping services.

Remember, valid contact information is important in order for you to get your free auto transport quotes. Fake telephone numbers and e-mails only hurt your chances of getting quality, top-of-the-line auto transport quotes, and wastes our time and your time in the process.

Since we only have room for one vehicle in our quote form, additional vehicles will need to be priced by the companies that send you your auto transport quotes. It’s not a big deal – they understand that about our quote form (and it’s for technical purposes, more than anything), so if you’re shipping more than one vehicle we recommend getting quotes for the largest of them (if they differ in size), as that’ll give you the maximum per-vehicle price. From there, just get your updated quotes from the companies directly.

Your vehicle information is important to your overall auto transport prices, as a small car will cost a lot more than a large pickup truck. At the same time, please don’t lie about the vehicle you need to ship; if you need to ship a Chevy Silverado 3500HD Duly, put that in the quote form; getting quotes for a small vehicle when you’re shipping a big one will only cause problems and potentially delay your shipment, especially if the vehicle is so large a flatbed shipper is needed.

You can get both open and enclosed auto transport quotes completely free by filling out our free online quote form. Enclosed transportation is more expensive than open, and is generally reserved for vehicles that are quite valuable, rare or otherwise high-end. If you’re shipping a vehicle you plan on driving every day, chances are open transport is the best way to go, but enclosed auto transport is also available to you.

If something comes up and you cannot be there for the pickup or delivery of your vehicle, you need to have someone else who can do it for you. With terminals on their way out the door, as it were, door to door auto transport services are the most common and easiest to find, but they require someone there to sign the paperwork at pickup and delivery, which is important. If you can’t make it, make sure to find someone who can help you by being there when you’re needed, to avoid problems at pickup or delivery.

American Auto Shipping is completely free for you to use. If you fill out our free online quote form, the quotes you receive in your e-mail from our stable of reliable shipping companies will be 100% free for you. Likewise, if you call us, it will be on a toll-free telephone number, and we collect no payment from you – no credit card numbers, no reservations for a truck, nothing like that. Our agents are not licensed auto transport brokers, but rather here to give free advice and direction for any who need it. They are experts in the car shipping industry, so don’t hesitate to call and speak to one for help or advice.

Don’t have any more than 1/4 of a tank of gas in your vehicle when the car shipper comes to pick up your vehicle. Auto transport prices are based on weight, and believe it or not gasoline can weight a lot when you have a lot of it. If everyone shipping a car had a full tank upon loading, truck weights would skyrocket and it could cause problem. Don’t cause problems. Keep a quarter-tank of gas in your car before your auto transport driver comes to pick your vehicle up.

Keep in mind that the weight of the vehicle you’re shipping has a lot to do with the overall price you pay, but lying about what you’re shipping will cause more problems. It’s best to tell your shipping company exactly what you need transported and make sure to let them know of any body modifications that could result in a higher weight.

Looking for auto transport to or from Miami? If so, you’re in luck – even if it’s the depth of the winter season, most car shippers are willing to run routes into and out of Miami, considering it’s one of the most popular and important car shipping areas in the entire United States. If you’re looking for auto transport services to or from Miami, Florida, don’t hesitate to fill out our free quote form or call us at our toll-free telephone number to get started.

Though the day after Thanksgiving is not considered a holiday in and of itself, many places are still closed Thursday-thru-Sunday in order to give their employees more time off to enjoy the holidays. While this doesn’t hold true for many companies in the car shipping industry, some still do the whole four-day-weekend-thing, and that may include your shipping company. If your shipper is closed, don’t worry – they’ll likely be open again on Monday, ready to help you with all your auto transport needs.

Now that Thanksgiving is over and we’re on our way to some normalcy again, please understand that some companies may take today off in order to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday even more. This may mean some of your representatives may not be in the office. This shouldn’t affect customers who have pickup or delivery services scheduled for today, but for those of you still waiting on a truck to pickup or deliver your vehicle it may mean an extra day or two of waiting.

Happy Thanksgiving from American Auto Shipping! Please understand that this day is meant for us to give thanks for everything that we have, and is a time for many people to enjoy the company of their families. This is just as true for auto transport companies, and there may be some out there that decide to spend the day with their wife and children as opposed to moving freight across the country. This usually results in delays of pickup or delivery for a day or two, so keep that in mind and enjoy your holiday – and let the auto transport carriers enjoy theirs, too.

If you have kids, you’ll want to make sure that any car seats are left out of the vehicle during transport. Many companies will allow you to stow them in the trunk of your vehicle, or in a storage area if you have a minivan or an SUV, but you should not leave them buckled up in the vehicle as they might be considered household goods, or at least not a part of the vehicle proper.

One of the most important things you can do when it comes to shipping your vehicle is to get the insurance information from the transport company. If your vehicle sustains damage during transport (rare, though not altogether unheard of), you want to make sure that you’re covered, and the best way to do that is to get the policy information from your shipping company when they pick the vehicle up.

Did you know that many auto transport companies offer discounts for various things? For instance, most every company will give discounts to military members or veterans, and still others offer discounts for students shipping from or to their university. There are many different discounts, so make sure to talk to a representative about it today.

Don’t forget our toll-free telephone number! You can get in touch with a live auto transport expert who can answer general questions about the industry and also help you get your free car shipping quotes. If you need help navigating our website, or if you have questions about how much it’ll cost to ship your vehicle, you should give us a call. Our reps are standing by to help you with all your auto transport needs, so call 800-930-7417 today and get the most out of your shipment today.

If you’re wondering what type of auto transport carrier you should choose, remember this rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t drive it on the highway in the rain, don’t ship it on an open auto shipping truck. Expensive, rare, collectible, antique, exotic and even some luxury vehicles shouldn’t be drive on the highway in the rain or snow; if you’re shipping the type of car that you only drive in great conditions to enjoy the sake of driving the car, and not relying on it to actually get you anywhere any time soon, enclosed transportation is your best bet. If you drive it every day, or if you drive it for some specific purpose other than enjoyment, open auto transport services are probably the way to go.

It’s been coming down in Buffalo for days now, with snows expected to reach over 7 feet in some areas. If you’re shipping a vehicle into or out of Buffalo, you should be expecting delays – that’s the type of weather that no car transport company will be able to move through, so don’t get upset that it’s taking longer to get your vehicle picked up or delivered. Any vehicles scheduled to be delivered likely will have to wait, or else meet the driver somewhere else where there isn’t snow accumulation taller than most people.

Larger vehicles run the risk of being unable to fit on a standard auto transport truck. Usually vehicles such as heavy duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles are the most common ones that can’t fit, but other things such as large Sprinter vans or even other types of largo cargo vans may not be able to fit, depending on the size of the truck it’s trying to ship along. Talk to an auto transport representative for more information.

Make sure to write down pertinent information about the auto transport company that you book with. You should have the name of the company, their telephone number and the name of your representative, as well as your order/quote number or ID, on a piece of paper that is easily accessible. This will help you tremendously in keeping notes about your shipment and also making sure you know exactly who has your vehicle at all times.

Few auto transport companies will allow you to make payment plans for a shipment, so you should really make sure that you have the means for paying for your shipment. Budget options are available, and many transportation companies are willing to work with you prior to shipping your vehicle, but once it’s shipped you can’t just blow it off – they’ll likely hold your vehicle as collateral until you pay, and they’re within their rights to do so.

Did you know we have a Tip of the Day Archive? You can click on the “Auto Transport Tip of the Day” tab on our menu and see all the old tips of the day that we’ve posted over the years. This is a great way to get some good overarching information on car shipping, especially if it’s something you have never done before.

If you are unsure about an auto transport company you received a quote from, you can always look up their reputation at the Better Business Bureau and TransportReviews.com. These are auto transport industry-leading review websites that can give you great overviews on potential shippers and their business practices. The longer an auto shipping company has been in business, typically the better they are; longevity in this industry is one of the most important things that you can have on your side as a car transporter.

You can get free auto transport quotes for almost any type of car, truck, SUV, minivan, cargo van or pickup truck – really, if it can roll, brake and steer, we can likely get you quotes to ship it. For more information on auto transport for specific types of vehicles, make sure to visit our Model and Brand Specific Shipping Info page to read more about different vehicles and what to expect when transporting them.

Did you know that American Auto Shipping can get you both auto transport and household moving quotes? You can fill out our free online auto transport quote form, and on the contact information portion select the option to receive free household moving quotes as well as your auto transport quotes. This is a great option for anyone moving and needing quotes to ship their household goods as well as their vehicle.

Please remember that, when shipping a vehicle, it doesn’t necessarily have to be spotless. In fact, a bit of dirt prior to an auto transport company picking your vehicle up can actually help protect the paint from minor dings, dents and scratches. Some vehicles, of course, you don’t want getting dirty, but for the vast majority of customers shipping their daily driving vehicles, a bit of dirt can help a lot.

If you need assistance and decide to call our toll-free telephone number, please be courteous and polite to our representatives. They work hard to make sure that your questions get answered and that they help you get your quotes or whatever else you need, but they’re only human and they make mistakes from time to time. Just remember, our representatives are human beings too, and they don’t like being yelled at – and some might yell back.

Please understand that auto transport takes a while from pickup to delivery. Generally, auto shippers can only travel 350-400 miles per day, and this is the average for most car shipping companies so you can quickly calculate your transit time by taking the total distance from pickup to delivery and dividing it by 350 to get the rough number of days on the road. This can be useful when planning your shipment.

If you have questions about auto transport or household moving, make sure to check out our frequently asked questions pages. You can find them under the “articles” heading on the menu bar, near the top of the page. Chances are we’ve already answered the question you’re asking, and you can save some time by getting to understand the auto transport industry a little better.

Moving household items can be tricky and expensive, which is why when gathering free household moving quotes it’s always best to overestimate how much you have as opposed to underestimating. Overestimating how many boxes you have or how much your stuff weighs will give you higher quotes initially, but after final weigh will likely be lower – as opposed to the other way around – which will help you budget better.

When shipping a vehicle, you should try to get it running, if it is not currently, as shipping a non-running vehicle tends to cost upwards of $150 or more over the cost of a running vehicle. The main reason why is because auto transporters usually drive vehicles onto and off of their trucks; a non-running vehicle requires a winch to load or unload it, and since not all carriers have them, and they’re expensive to own and maintain, carriers that do have them tend to charge more if they have to use them.

Many routes change in price every few weeks, as there are a lot of factors that go into an auto transport price including gasoline and diesel prices and inclement weather in various areas. Quotes that you get are usually good for 1-2 weeks from the day you get them, as that’s normally how long it takes to get a vehicle picked up. Auto transport is a fluid industry so keep that in mind, and if you have old quotes you may want to get some new ones with updated prices.

Our online quote request form works best if you type in zip codes for the ship car from and to sections – if you do, you’ll see a drop-down list pop up and you can then select the city you are shipping from or to from that. Our form does not recognize full or partial addresses or misspelled city names or wrong zip codes, so double-check your pickup and delivery info before filling out our form too.

If you have questions or concerns about our policies or business practices, don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss them with an auto transport professional. We’re here to help our customers get the most out of their auto transport experience, and we want to make things as easy as possible for you. That’s also why we put so much information about the auto transport industry on our website, so you have plenty of information about all aspects of car transportation and will be able to make better, more informed decisions as a result.

You don’t need to call your auto transport company every single day, you know. If you’re waiting for pickup or your vehicle is in transit, and it hasn’t been the full length of time (say it’s only been 3 days since you booked or since your vehicle was picked up), make sure to wait. Time is a major factor in auto transport and there’s not much you can do about the waiting part of it.

If you’re looking for more specific information on a city in a specific state, and you don’t see it, make sure to check back later; we’re constantly adding new information about different cities in the U.S. that auto transport companies run routes in and out of and that customers are going to and from, so if you don’t see it now, just wait  a bit – it’ll likely be there in a bit.

If you have household items that you want to ship while your vehicle is being transported, you’ll want to discuss your options with an auto transport representative. Most companies only allow so much in a vehicle on a transport truck; the rest of the time, you’ll need a household moving company to ship your goods, even if there’s not a lot. You can get free household moving and auto transport quotes by filling out our free form, if you’d like.

The vast majority of auto transporters on the road today are of the open variety, which means that enclosed transportation services are generally a bit harder to find, and more expensive as a result. Most cars won’t need to be shipped enclosed, just the high-end, rare, valuable, classic or just plain expensive ones. Enclosed auto transport services can be made quicker and easier, more often than not, if you move your pickup and/or delivery locations to a major metro area, as that’s where auto transporters like to run routes to and from.

With the holidays approaching, many auto transport drivers want to try to run routes that take them close to home, so they can spend a few days with their families before heading back on the road. This is a time when routes can change suddenly in terms of price and availability, so now is a great time to get auto transport quotes before the heart of the holiday season comes around.

As we shift into the fall and winter shipping seasons, you’ll want to start keeping an eye on the weather, especially in areas prone to heavy winter weather conditions like snow and ice. Auto shippers certainly will be, and the weather in a region can impact auto transport prices and carrier availability in the area, which can affect your overall shipping schedule. Be prepared by keeping up to date on the weather in your area and talk to a representative for more information.

As we start to get deeper into the fall and winter shipping seasons, you should do your best to prepare for possibly higher prices on routes through more northern areas, as snow and ice becomes more problematic, and you should also be on the lookout for deals into or out of areas with warm climates, such as Miami or Dallas. You can get free auto transport quotes by filling out our form too, don’t forget.

Auto transport carriers can only travel so far for so long in a given day, per federal regulations. They could lose their license if they drive over the limit for time or mileage, which is why they can only go so far every day, and this equates to auto shippers taking 4-7 days to ship a car from New England to Florida, and two weeks from Norfolk to San Francisco. It takes time, so make sure you have plenty on hand come transport time.

For larger vehicles, you should try to have the overall length, width, height and approximate weight of the vehicle prior to getting your quotes. Though you may not need the directions right away, you’ll likely need them when it comes time to book your order so you don’t get hosed by your shipper finding the wrong type of carrier. Have dimensions for anything that is larger than a standard pickup truck, or any vehicle that has modifications that alter said dimensions from stock.

Did you know you can get free auto transport quotes even on the weekends or after hours? It’s true. Keep in mind, though, that few of our advertisers are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it may take them until the next business day to get your quote to you. However, it’s still worth the time to fill out our form, even if you have to wait, since we clear all our advertisers and make sure they’re top-rated companies in the industry.

Wanting to ship your vehicle enclosed? Make sure that it’s actually worth it – as different vehicles have different monetary and sentimental values attached to them, enclosed transportation only makes sense for those vehicles that would see a large value loss should something happen. Most cars today, even some of the higher-end luxury cars, don’t need enclosed shipping simply because of how common they are on the road today.

If you’re shipping a taller than normal vehicle, like a Sprinter van, make sure to have the actual height of the vehicle – this is best done by literally going outside with a measuring tape and actually measuring the height from top to ground. This will give you accurate dimensions you can then give to your shipping company in order to get the most accurate quotes possible, as well as giving the shipper accurate information so they can get you the right type of auto transport carrier.

If you need quotes to ship a vehicle, make sure to fill out our free online quote form, but please be aware that you will receive e-mails from auto transport companies containing your car shipping quotes. You may also get some follow-up phone calls in regards to the quotes that you receive, so please bear that in mind if you fill out our free quote request form. You can also call us at 800-930-7417 with any questions or concerns, as always.

As winter gets nearer, more auto transport companies are closing up shop and waiting out the cold season. This means less trucks on the road, which generally would mean higher prices; however, fewer people are also shipping their vehicles, so while the industry slows down there are still plenty of auto transport companies out there doing business through the snow and muck. This is generally good for you, as prices usually drop a bit since carriers have to take what they can get.

You should never put any type of valuable item in your vehicle if it is to be shipped by an auto transport company. Items left inside vehicles being shipped are not insured by the carriers’ insurance, which means you’re on the hook should anything get lost, damaged or stolen during transport. Auto transport is designed to ship cars, so it’s best to make sure that it’s only the vehicle being shipped.

Don’t wait until the last second to book your order with an auto transport company; chances are it’ll only backfire and you won’t get your vehicle shipped when you need it to be. To ensure that your shipment goes smoothly, try to book with an auto transport company at least two weeks before your need your vehicle picked up. This will give your shippers the time they need to organize and plan everything without having to do any last-minute scrambling.

Preparing for an auto transportation experience is important, so make sure to take the time and do it properly. If you need help or tips on how to prepare for your vehicle being shipped, make sure to give us a call to speak to one of our live agents. They can answer your questions, help you get free auto shipping quotes and can also get you on the right track for preparing for your next shipment and can help you make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.

Shipping a vehicle that doesn’t run? If so, it’s not a problem, just be prepared to spend a bit more. Most auto transport companies charge a non-operative vehicle fee if you need to  ship a non-running vehicle, because it takes more time and energy to load a car that can’t move under its own power onto and off of a transport truck. If your vehicle is not running, make sure to mention it when giving the year, make and model information in order to get the most accurate auto transport quotes you can.

If you’re having problems getting our auto transport quote request form to submit, make sure to double-check the spelling of city names and that zip codes are correct. Our auto transport quote form can be finicky; if you’re entering in city names, make sure to wait until the name drop-down appears; this happens after you type in a zip code or city name. If no drop-down appears, check the spelling of the city or that you have the appropriate zip code.

Don’t forget to read about auto transport to and from specific cities and states. You can visit our Auto Shipping Cities page as well as as our Auto Transport States pages to read more about almost every city in every state – or at least within the top five metropolitan areas in every state. We’re constantly adding more information, so make sure to check back often for all the latest in auto transport.

Please tell your auto transport representative if you have any items in your vehicle prior to loading or unloading. Additional weight needs to be accounted for in some way, and if an auto transporter is shipping a vehicle that is heavier than they thought, it could push them overweight. This can spell doom for a transportation company as an overweight truck must be brought under weight, which can mean unloading of personal items and even entire cars.

If you have questions that you need answered about your auto transport experience, don’t hesitate to call. From 7am to 7pm PST someone will be here answering your calls and helping you get your quotes, so don’t be afraid to call us. Of course, you can also fill out our free online form, which itself is self-explanatory, and if you do you’ll get multiple free auto transport quotes e-mailed to you within about an hour.

Trying to figure out how something in the auto transport industry works? If you have questions or concerns about what we do or who we are, give us a call at 800-930-7417 to speak to one of our live agents. We live and breathe auto transport, so you can rest assured that you’re in good hands with American Auto Shipping.

Household goods transportation services are not as cut-and-dry as auto transport, so if you need quotes to ship household goods too make sure to visit our Household Goods Moving Articles page. You’ll get great information about the household goods moving industry and how it works, as well as access to our free household goods moving quote request form, which will get you in contact with some of the best household moving companies in the industry.

Keep sentimental items out of the vehicle that you are transporting, always. Sentimental items should not be shipped as part of your “junk in the trunk” allotment, because a lot can happen and damage to unsecured goods during transport is more common than you’d think. Be smart, be safe, and don’t put things in your vehicle that you’ll be upset if they’re lost, stolen or damaged.

Timing can be everything in the auto shipping industry, so don’t make the mistake of jumping the gun too early if your carrier hasn’t arrived yet. It can be difficult for them to schedule multiple loads for pickup and delivery across different states, trying to make sure that they can get to where they need to go. Give your shipper some slack – it’s likely not their fault if they’re late to the pickup or delivery.

Auto transport companies like to stick to commonly-traveled routes that have a high rate of customers going along them. These routes generally have major metro areas as pickup and delivery locations, so if you need to save money on your shipment, relocating your pickup and delivery to bigger cities, if possible, should help. Auto transport is expensive; talk to a representative about ways to save money today.

Auto transporters prefer to run routes during the summer months on account of the snow and ice in many places of the country, but that doesn’t always mean cheaper prices during the summer. Auto transport companies try to stay away from really hot areas such as Las Vegas during the depths of the hottest season because the excess heat can hurt their trucks.

If you see information that you don’t believe is accurate on our website – be it about a city, state, vehicle, or just in one of our auto transport blog posts – make sure to call us and let us know. We strive to maintain 100% accuracy in our facts, but nobody’s perfect, so if we make a mistake don’t hesitate to call us and let us know so we can fix it.

If you’re having problems with one of our advertisers, don’t hesitate to call us directly. We strive to maintain our high quality of service and upstanding customer interaction, and while we clear all our advertisers for reliability and integrity not all of them are cut from the same cloth, and we only know as much as you tell us. If you have problems or suspect one of our advertisers, call us or send us an e-mail and we’ll look into it.

Make sure to read our helpful blog, located under the “Blog” section on our menu bar. It’s chock full of information about shipping vehicles to and from specific cities and regions as well as helpful auto transport and household goods transportation tips and tricks. We cover all the bases here on American Auto Shipping, so use our blog to your advantage and get the right information and great quotes in one fell swoop.

Please have all your information – pickup and delivery zip codes, year, make and model of your vehicle, approximate moving dates, etc. before you call us looking for free quotes. You generally only want to spend a minute or two on the phone with one of our representatives – they can get you quotes to ship a vehicle and can answer some questions but that’s really about it.

If you know someone in need of auto transport services, don’t hesitate to help them out. Give them our number or our website URL and tell them they can get multiple free auto transport quotes quickly from reliable and reputable auto transport companies – they’ll appreciate it as much as we do!

If you call us for help with your auto transport quotes, please make sure to have all your information on-hand when the representative comes on the line. Waiting for you to get the pickup or delivery information, or to figure out what the model of your car is, wastes everyone’s time, so make sure you have that when you call. It’ll speed things up and make life easier for everyone, and your auto transport representative will appreciate it.

If you need to ship something that isn’t a vehicle, please be aware that auto transport companies can’t ship it. If you have household goods that you need moved, make sure to visit our Household Moving Articles section. It differs from our auto transport section and has great and pertinent information about household moving for anyone looking to use the service.

When booking your order you want to make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Booking your auto transport at least two weeks before you need your vehicle picked up will give your shipper time to arrange transport and the carrier they choose to get to you when you need him to. If you know you’ll be shipping further than two weeks out, don’t wait; the more lead time your auto transport company has, the better your experience will be.

Household goods moving is a lot like auto transport in how it’s initially setup, but it takes a lot longer and costs a lot more. We can get you free household moving quotes; just visit our Household Moving Articles page and it’s in the left sidebar. It’s easy to use and completely free, and you can call us to get all your auto transport or household goods moving questions answered.

When shipping a car, make sure to have all the necessary information for your auto transport representative at the very beginning. Once you get quotes and start talking to companies about actually shipping your car and booking your order, you’re going to need information such as the sub-model of your vehicle, the VIN number, its color, and more. If you are unsure about what you need talk to your auto transport representative, or one of ours, and get the full scoop.

Auto transport is a time-sensitive industry, so if you’re looking to ship a vehicle you want to make sure that you have the time to dedicate to the process. You’ll need to wait at least a few days for pickup – it can stretch to over two weeks, though, so keep that in mind. You’ll also need to have time to meet the carrier at pickup and delivery. Auto transport takes time; make sure to give yourself enough of it to have a good experience.

Routes into and out of Miami are going to be pretty cheap soon, so make sure to book your auto transport services into Miami sooner rather than later. As the winter season approaches more and more auto shippers are going to go to Florida and the rest of the Deep South, so keep that in mind. If you need auto transport services, fill out our free form or give us a call for more.

Auto transport is moving out of the busy season, so right now is a great time to get great deals on auto transport to and from Florida, New York and other areas in the southern United States. Auto shippers are getting ready to adjust their routes, so get in on the ground floor before the deals are gone for good.

Auto transport is not a cheap industry. It’s expensive from top to bottom, no matter if you’re shipping three hundred miles or three thousand miles. Budget accordingly; get your quotes early, find the right company for your needs, give yourself plenty of time and make sure that all the “I’s” are dotted and the “T’s” are crossed before your car is loaded onto the auto transport trailer.

Please remember that, unless your auto transport representative says otherwise, personal items are not allowed in the cab of a vehicle that is slated for transport. Auto shippers are not licensed to carry household goods, and they can get in trouble if there’s anything like that in your vehicle. Keep that in mind – if the carrier shipping your car gets in trouble, you’ll likely be waiting weeks for another one.

If something comes up and you need to reschedule your auto transport pickup, make sure to tell someone at the brokerage you booked with that you have to rescheduling. Rescheduling may add more time to your pickup or delivery, but likely won’t cost anymore; it can, however, lead to canceled orders if you don’t inform anyone about the change.

If you’re moving to a new state or city, make sure to do some research on it to determine if it’s really where you want to move. Metrics such as crime rates, quality of schools, house values, rental prices and more can make or break a move for a lot of people, so make sure that you know what you’re getting into wherever it is you plan on moving to.

Make sure you know your auto transport company. By this we mean it’s best to do some homework on your shipper and see how other people have fared using their services. Always have that information on hand when talking to your auto transport representative so the right carrier is selected to perform the task.

Auto transport companies typically have a hard time allowing household goods in the cab of a vehicle while it’s being shipped. Many offer the “junk in the trunk” package – put up to 50 pounds of linens in the trunk – but few will allow actual items in the cab itself. Talk to your auto transport representative for more information, but be prepared to hear much the same as what you read on our website.

You want to make sure that you have enough time to handle your auto transport. Auto transport companies run on tight schedules, and they don’t have the time to wait around for you if you aren’t ready on the day you’re scheduled to have your vehicle picked up. So do them a favor – be ready when they need you to be. It’ll save everyone a lot of time and hassle, and will likely save you money too.

Auto transport is a fluid industry. It takes a lot of understanding in how auto transport drivers interact with brokers, and how those brokers interact with you, in order to understand why certain things happen the way they do. Patience and willingness to listen, as a customer, are two of the most important things you can have that will make your shipment so much easier.

Auto shipping companies are not allowed to talk on the phone or text while they are driving, which is why it can be difficult to actually get a hold of them. They are supposed to call back everyone that called them while driving once they are able to, so if you cannot get a hold of your shipper right away just give them some time and they will get back to you.

Most auto transport companies no longer offer terminal to terminal shipping, not because it is more expensive but because there are fewer and fewer operating terminals. This makes it more difficult for your auto transport representative to find companies willing to ship terminal to terminal because there are fewer places for them to pickup and deliver to, and it’s usually not worth the time.

Really hot temperatures can cause auto transport trucks, particularly older ones, to overheat more easily and cause mechanical failures due to the heat. Some companies that operate older trucks tend to avoid areas like the southwest U.S. during the summer months because of this, and this can have an adverse effect on prices and pickup availability.

Make sure to leave any valuables out of your vehicle during transport. If you do decide to put things in your vehicle while it is being shipped (something we don’t recommend), make them be cheap linens, like towels or sheets, because they are light and are not worth much. You may not think of it, but there are people out there who try to rob cars on the back of a transport truck, so spare yourself the trouble and don’t put anything valuable in your vehicle.

More and more auto transport companies are using social media to connect with their customers, and things like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ can be great tools to find new companies. You should work with companies that are active on social media sites, not only because they’re trying to gain more exposure but because it gets them in contact with their customers much more easily. You can use social media to see how customers find their services, and active companies tend to be more helpful as well.

Technology is a great thing, but some auto shippers avoid it like the plague. It’s not surprising; for some it can make things easier, but for others it’s just a burden. Talk to your auto transport company about the shippers they use and how technology can affect your auto transport prices. Some can give you discounts based on the technology they use as well, so ask about that too.

Auto shipping is so subjective that you’re going to have a bad time if you pick the first company you find. Take some time and do your homework; most auto transport companies use different carriers and price things differently, so if you take a bit of time to do some research you could save quite a bit of money on your next car shipment.

If you’re looking to transport hazardous materials, you won’t find any takers at an auto transport company. There are quite a few things that cannot cross state lines in a car, notably things that coincide with the USPS banned materials list. You should do some research – there are quite a few household chemicals that are surprisingly banned, and it’s always better to be safe than in prison for illicit transportation of controlled substances across state boundaries.

Albuquerque, surprisingly, has an average high in July of 90 degrees; in other words, it’s a lot more mellow there than many people seem to think. Averaging 278 days of sunshine per year, it’s one of the sunniest cities in New Mexico, which makes sense as to why it has slowly become a popular auto transportation location, which has helped lower prices to the city in recent years.

Chicago is the largest city in Illinois, so naturally shipping there tends to be cheaper and easier than other cities in the state. However, it’s located in the far northeastern part of the state, which means that many transporters may charge less to ship to a smaller city on the interstate into Chicago but not nearly as far away.

Parking lots of major stores or malls are probably the best places to meet auto transportation companies for pickup or delivery, though they can do it anywhere so long as they have the room. They’re big trucks, and they can’t just fit anywhere, so they need to find places that they can have the room to get cars on and off and maneuver without running into anything or getting stuck.

Shipping to Florida? Now’s the time of year that everyone else is, too, so you should expect higher prices out of most areas into Florida. Auto transporters are able to pick the highest-paying loads first, so the more you pay, typically the faster your vehicle will get picked up.

Lying to your auto transport representative about the type of vehicle you are shipping is a bad idea that can lead to increased prices mid-shipment or a canceled order. The accuracy of your quotes is heavily dependent on what you’re shipping and where it’s shipping from and to, and lying about those things can lead to problems down the line. Honesty, as always, is the best policy in the car transport industry.

Auto transportation services take time, and this time is hard to handle sometimes. Patience is needed, and understanding of the way the car shipping industry works – visit our blog or our articles section for more on that. But you do need to understand why it takes time and how you can make things easier on yourself while you wait.

Please remember that if you fill out our free online quote form you will get multiple free quotes e-mailed to you and you may also get some phone calls from those auto transport companies to talk about your quote and your shipment. Be prepared for both of those; it’s not really fair for you to call us after filling out our form and saying you didn’t know, because it’s literally plastered all over our website what will happen if you do so.

If you have questions about our services or some aspect of the car transport industry, don’t hesitate to call. Calling and asking questions is one of the best things that you can do, and can mean the difference between a good experience and a nightmare. It’s one of the best ways to get informed because you get to talk a live agent without the hassle of a sales pitch. We don’t ship cars – we just get you quotes.

You wouldn’t think you can get household moving quotes from an auto transport company, but it’s easy. When you fill out our auto transport quote form, you can select an option for household moving quotes as well, and you’ll get free household moving quotes from multiple different household moving companies.

Make sure to keep your vehicle completely clean for when the auto transport carrier comes to pick it up. You are not allowed to have anything in the cab of the vehicle, not even spare change or those cool beaded seat covers, though in reality many auto shippers just don’t care as long as it’s not blatant. Some are really picky about it, some aren’t – talk to your transportation truck driver for more about their specific policies.

We hope you had a great 4th of July! Please note that auto transporters tend to not work holidays, as they’d rather spend them with their family, and during the 4th of July weekend many auto shippers are not working. This can delay many pickups and deliveries until Monday, or later in the week, so please keep that in mind as you’re waiting for your vehicle to be picked up or delivered.

Tornadoes can seriously hamper auto transportation services. The Midwest is the main tornado area of the U.S, and they can strike without much warning and cause millions of dollars in damage. When moving through Tornado Alley, auto shippers keep a close eye on the weather reports, and you should too – at least during tornado season.

We recommend that you not put any items in your vehicle if you are transporting it unless you absolutely have to. Not only will they have to go in the trunk, but if you do put stuff there it won’t be insured against theft or damage from your auto transport company. This means you should NOT put anything expensive or valuable anywhere in the car, and unless you’d be able to easily let go of said objects if something were to happen, ship them via another method.

Always get copies of your Bill of Lading any other type of contract you get from your shipping company, and always read the fine print. Your Bill of Lading will have your shippers’ license and insurance information right there with it, as well as policies regarding deductibles and the like, so try to be thorough when reading the fine print, and always ask questions if you need to – shippers of vehicles are required to answer truthfully.

Major metropolitan areas (cities with over 100,000 residents) are the most popular areas for auto shippers to run routes to and from. They provide more opportunities for new loads and new customers, and many sit along major interstates so shippers don’t have to waste fuel going to out-of-the-way areas. This is why shipping to and from major metro areas is often cheaper than shipping to or from smaller areas. Keep that in mind.

You’d be surprised at how much fuel costs can affect your auto transport prices. With fuel prices upwards of $4/gallon, auto transport prices are some of the highest they’ve ever been. Keep that in mind when budgeting your shipment of your vehicle.

Moving to Boston? It’s a big city, which typically means there are areas that large interstate moving vans can’t get everywhere due to city ordinances prohibiting large trucks in small areas. If you’re moving to an area your moving van can’t go, you’ll likely see a smaller moving van (maybe two) showing up at your door, because your household mover will need to transfer your goods to a smaller moving van owned by a local moving company to get under the weight or size limits.

If you’re looking to ship a recreational vehicle, make sure you let your shipping company know what type it is, as different types of RV’s can mean different methods of shipping. Most will need flatbed transportation, which will up the price; still, whether it’s a travel-trailer, motor home, ATV or some other type of recreational vehicle, let your shipper know as soon as possible.

Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine is a long journey, even for a car transporter. When shipping from one to the other take that into account and plan your time well; you’re going to be without at least one car for two to three weeks. It takes time to ship across the country, especially when the shipment is close to 3,200 miles.

Many auto transport companies provide discounts for a variety of different reasons. Things like multi-car discounts, senior citizen discounts, student discounts – they all are available for most companies as they make great sales tactics. Auto transport discounts won’t help mitigate your costs all that much, but a little bit is better than no discount at all, eh?

Looking to ship a vehicle to the State of Washington? It can be more expensive than shipping to California or Oregon, due to its more isolated nature, but at the same time I-5 – one of the most popular north-south interstates – runs through it, which should help your car transport prices.

Shipping a vehicle to Syracuse? You’ll find it’s a lot cheaper to ship there than a city that sits in the middle of nowhere in New York City. Home to over 145,000 residents and anchoring a metro area of 662,000, Syracuse is a popular shipping location and is home to several different auto transport companies as well, which is good news for you and your time frame (and wallet).

The Dodge Challenger is considered a pony car, which makes it easier to ship as it’s the same size as a full-size car, just a bit heavier. But the extra weight likely won’t do anything to hike up the price, as the Challenger is still considered a regular car. This makes it easier – and cheaper – for you to ship it, which should help the cause wallet-wise.

Household moving reviews, like auto transport reviews, are a great way to find a good household moving company. Not all auto shippers will help you find household movers, so it may be a good idea to find your household mover first, as they are typically more inclined to find a carrier to assist you with your automobile shipment as opposed to the other way around.

Make sure that you read and understand the terms and conditions and the bill of lading you receive when shipping your vehicle. It’s important that you know what your shippers’ stipulations are and how much liability they have should anything go wrong. It’s something you should already be in the habit of doing, to be honest, and not just when it comes to shipping cars.

Shipping from Baltimore to Cleveland is generally pretty easy; the distance is only 350 miles or so and the route is fairly easy as well. Most shippers will run northwest along I-70 and pass through Hagerstown and Pittsburgh, two major cities in western Maryland and Pennsylvania, respectively, which helps when it comes to shipping to Cleveland.

Shipping more than one vehicle with the same company can save you some good money come transport time. It’ll still cost more than shipping one vehicle by itself, but it’s cheaper than shipping two vehicles with two different shipping companies, thanks to most shippers offering multi-car discounts to customers in order to drum up new business.

Vermont is one of the most geographically isolated states in the U.S., and this is reflected in how much it costs to ship a vehicle there. Expensive? Maybe not break-the-bank spendy, but it takes more time and costs more money than shipping along more established routes or to and from major metropolitan areas (which Vermont sorely lacks – it’s largest city, Burlington, is home to just 42,000 residents).

Shipping to Little Rock, Arkansas isn’t hard, but it isn’t always easy, either. It sits along two major interstates – I-30 and I-40 – but it’s not all that popular with many people who ship their vehicles. Still, if you’re interested in shipping to or from Little Rock, Arkansas, fill out our free or give us a call and find out how we can help you do it.

If you’re shipping a Nissan GT-R, make sure you move it enclosed. Unless it’s somehow lost so much value it’s worth the same as a Dodge Neon, your 2014 GT-R should always be shipped in a protected carrier, away from the harmful elements that can wreck it’s value. It’s not worth $10k, it’s worth $100k, so treat it right, please.

If you’re interested in household moving quotes you should fill out our free household moving quote request form. It’s located on our household moving articles page, which is pretty easy to get to. The form itself is easy and takes only a minute to fill out and submit, and you can always call us toll-free to ask questions or have help getting your household or auto transport quotes fast and free.

Waiting for pickup or delivery of your vehicle is never fun, but when you’re stuck waiting, what can you do? If you’re without a mode of transportation, rental cars are great, and if your auto shipper is late in delivery some companies will reimburse you for the extra time you have your rental car.

Pocatello to Reno is hardly a common route, but it’s one that people have shipped on before. Expect longer pickup wait times, as both cities are rather isolated and not incredibly popular in the auto transport world. Is it impossible? No, of course not – it’ll likely cost more than another, more popular route of the same distance, but only because the route runs through nigh-uninhabited parts of the country.

Saving money on auto transportation can be a hassle, because everyone wants more, more, more (thanks, Billy Idol). But that doesn’t mean you can’t save money – it will help tremendously if you can move your rural pickup or delivery location to a larger area, as carriers like to travel from one major metro area to another. It could save you a few smackaroos, and by “a few” we mean a few hundred.

Shipping to Virginia is not the easiest thing, but it helps that I-95 and I-81 both run through the state. I=95 in particular runs through some of the largest metro areas in the entire country, and shipping to areas like Richmond or Alexandria will likely be cheaper than areas like Lynchburg, which are out in the middle of nowhere, as it were.

Juneau may be the second-largest city in the country by total area, but its population is just over 30,000 and it is not easy to get to with no roads. Juneau is a popular cruise line destination, meaning tourism is a major part of its economy, but shipping a vehicle there will still be expensive – more expensive than transport among the continental U.S, anyway, so keep that in mind when budgeting your shipment up north.

The Nissan Pathfinder is Nissan’s main compact SUV, slotted between the Xterra and the Murano. Shipping it shouldn’t be any different from transporting a normal sport utility vehicle like a Chevy Blazer or Ford Explorer, but talk to your shipper regardless to make sure you know how much you’re paying and what to expect come transport time.

Shipping antiques can be stressful and kind of scary, especially if you’re shipping family heirlooms and the like. Make sure that your shipping company knows how to properly pack and handle your antiques, and you should also read up on ways to do it. Bubble wrap and packing wrap are great ways to go, but they may not be your only options to protect your antiques – talk to a household moving company for more.

Overseas shipping is expensive and time consuming, but shipping overseas is sometimes the only way that a vehicle can be shipped. You should fill out our free form or give us a call for more information.

New York City to Anchorage is a long trip, and an expensive one too. It’s one of the longest routes, except maybe from Maine to Hawaii, so be prepared to be without your car for three to five weeks, on average, and you should anticipate spending at least a grand, but probably closer to two.

If there’s one thing you need to know about auto transport it’s that it takes time. Time to get it booked, time to get it picked up, time to get it transported – it takes time to do just about everything, so make sure you plan your shipment accordingly, and not doing anything at the last minute.

When transporting a vehicle to or from Utah you should expect slightly longer-than-average pickup and delivery times due to the sparse population outside of Salt Lake City. Prices may be a bit higher than average as well because of this. Keep these in mind so you don’t expect one thing just to find out it’s going to take longer or be more expensive than you anticipated, and make sure to budget accordingly.

Shipping to Baltimore is fairly easy, depending on where you’re coming from. Baltimore is a major port city and one of the main international shipping hubs. Typically, if you’re shipping your vehicle overseas to Europe, it’ll go out of the port of Baltimore.

The Nissan Altima Coupe is a bit smaller than the Altima Sedan, and will cost the same to ship. Unlike big SUV’s and pickup trucks, the coupe is a standard car, and weighs the same as a standard car (well, in the same weight range, anyway). This means you’ll get the cheapest rates for your Altima Coupe that are available.

Like in auto transportation, the household goods bill of lading is like your contract and receipt and terms and conditions for your move rolled into one. Movers use this to give you all you need in one fell swoop, and if you have questions make sure to ask them before you sign your bill of lading and make sure to read more about it on our handy blog.

Shipping a vehicle across the country can be a real pain, but that’s why cross-country auto movers are so great. They know how to get your vehicle from coast to coast and are trained in the art thereof, so you can rest assured knowing your shipment across the country will be handled by professional shipping companies if you fill out our free online form.

Topeka to Dallas doesn’t sound like a really popular auto shipping route, but because both are major metro areas in the Midwest and are connected by a single interstate, I-35, you’d be surprised at how often shippers run routes between the two. Topeka especially is a major distribution center for Central Kansas, and auto transportation is common through the area as a result.

Delivery times are fluid, as there are a lot of things that can cause delays when shipping a car across the country. You should expect at least a few delays, and we recommend keeping an open line of communication with your representative so you know what’s going on at all times. Delays aren’t fun, but typically they’re also not avoidable either, at least for car transporters.

Texas is the largest state in the contiguous U.S. and second only to Alaska. It has some of the largest cities in the country within its borders, including Houston – the fourth-largest – and San Antonio, the seventh. Those are typically the two most popular auto transport locations in the state, though Dallas is also up there as is Austin, the capital of the state.

Though Frankfort is one of the smaller cities in Kentucky, it is still the state capital, which means it has access to the Interstate Highway System. This makes it easier and cheaper for auto transporters to get in and out of Frankfort, particularly considering it sits along I-64 which in that area is a pretty important transportation corridor linking several major cities and interstate together.

The Chrysler 200 is the smallest automobile that Chrysler currently manufactures. As a mid-size sedan, auto shippers have plenty of experience handling vehicles of its size, and its size and weight should not make any difference in your overall auto transport price.

When moving to Dallas, make sure you know which part of the metro area you’re moving to if it isn’t the city proper. Zip codes help nail down household moving quotes and will be more accurate in the long run, which will lead to more accurate quotes.

Double booking your order can lead to all sorts of problems with you, your carrier and your broker. As most auto shippers use the same basic load board, they have access to all the same carriers. Double booking can lead to cancelled orders and could cost you your refund if you are due one.

Los Angeles to Las Vegas is one of the quickest auto transport routes. As Las Vegas is a popular location for auto transportation services despite being in the middle of nowhere, carrier availability to the city tends to be higher; if you’re shipping out of Los Angeles, it should be even higher, as L.A. is the most popular shipping location in the state of California.

Getting multiple auto transport quotes is important because it gives you more options and more resources when trying to find the right car shipping company. You can get up to ten free quotes by filling out our free online quote request form if you are interested as well.

Tennessee has quite a few major metropolitan areas, including Chattanooga, Johnson City, Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis. As such, there’s generally going to be cheaper and quicker auto transportation services to or from many bigger areas of the state. Like most states, it does have its rural areas, which will be more expensive to ship to or from, so keep that in mind.

Champaign may not be the largest or most famous town in Illinois, but it’s the home of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, and sits along three major interstate highways – in other words, shipping there isn’t nearly as difficult as to most other towns of its size (it’s actually a small city of about 82,000, but still).

Shipping any classic car, like the Camaro, should be done with car and precision. You want to find the right carrier to handle your classic car, and if it’s a really nice one you may want to consider enclosed transport. Many classic cars aren’t worth much and open transport is fine, but some – like older Camaros – it can be costly to ship open, and enclosed would likely be better. Talk to your shipper for more advice.

Moving is always a challenge, but Miami has a lot of different neighborhoods that are easy to access for moving companies. With easy access to I-95 and hundreds of square miles of area, moving to Miami has never been easier.

Dually trucks are huge, and they require a lot of power in order to haul them. Some are so big that they can’t fit on a standard car transport carrier, so if you’re shipping a dually truck make sure that you let your shipping company know so they don’t book the wrong truck for you.

Though Detroit is not the same it once was, it is still a popular auto transport location. Shipping down to Miami is one of the easiest, quickest and cheapest routes you can find, but like always pickup and price depend on carrier availability and more. Talk to your shipping company for more information.

Make sure you have your vehicle’s year, make and model on hand and ready to give when gathering quotes. There’s a big difference between a sports coupe and a full-size sport utility vehicle, and in auto transport that can be a swing of several hundred dollars that you’ll end up having to pay.

Shipping to South Dakota? Your best bet for availability and pricing is during the spring and summer, when carriers are more likely to run routes to the northern Midwest. During the winter the snows set in, and auto shipping is nigh impossible to or from the region.

Daytona Beach is a popular transport location on the east coast of Florida. Sandwiched between Jacksonville to the north and Miami to the south, Daytona Beach and its surrounding metro area is a near-perfect location for great auto shipping prices.

The Ford Flex is Ford’s main full-size crossover and has been in production since 2008. As a full-size crossover SUV you will need to prepare yourself for higher-than-average prices (read: higher than a four-door sedan) due to the increased size and weight.

Moving is always a hassle so make sure to fill out our free online household moving quotes request form and get multiple household moving quotes from reputable and reliable household movers. You can’t lose with our household shippers.

Unless your auto transport company says it’s okay, don’t put anything in the trunk of your vehicle – not even a vehicle safety kit (tuck it under a seat or something). The weight of any extra items could lead to auto transporters not making weight at a weigh station, which leads to all sorts of problems.

Baltimore to New Orleans isn’t the most popular route, but it’s up there. As two major port cities, it’s not uncommon to see vehicles shipping to one from the other in order to be further shipped overseas – typically shipments out of New Orleans are going to South America and Baltimore to Europe.

The routes your vehicle is shipped along, and the prices thereof, depend heavily on where the cities are actually located. Things such as distance, ease of access and popularity with customers can call affect your auto transport price, so get the low down with our city and state articles, which you can find links to in the menu bar at the top of every page.

South Carolina is not the most populated state in the Union, but it is popular with auto transport customers and its infrastructure allows easy access to major metropolitan areas within the state. This keeps prices lower on average and helps keep pickup and delivery times lower as well.

Davenport, Iowa, is the third-largest city in Iowa, and despite its location in the far eastern reaches of the state it is easy to access and thus generally cheaper for auto transporters to ship vehicles to and from. This is good news for you as it generally means your prices will be lower to and from Davenport on average.

The Ford Focus, Ford’s second-smallest vehicle, is one of the most common vehicles shipped today. As such, it will be one of the cheapest on your specific route – however, keep in mind that different routes carry different prices.

Cleaning the home you are moving out of will likely help you sell your old home faster and could possibly net you more money for your home. Take a bit of time and make sure to clean your old home thoroughly after your stuff is moved, or hire a professional cleaning company to do it for you. You’ll be glad you did.

Shipping to Tennessee can be difficult because part of it is incredibly rural and part of it is rather urban. Eastern Tennessee is generally more expensive to ship to as it’s almost all rural outside of a few larger areas, and there aren’t a lot of big cities nearby in the other states – not to mention a major lack of transportation routes like interstates. So expect slightly higher prices when shipping to or from Tennessee, particularly Eastern Tennessee.

Shipping a high-end luxury vehicle can be nerve-wracking, so spare yourself the worry and ship your super-expensive luxury car with an enclosed transport truck. They may be more expensive but they’ll save you a lot of hassle and make sure your car is protected against all damaging agents.

You don’t need to be present for the pickup or delivery of your vehicle, but you will need to have someone be there. This can be a friend, co-worker, family member – it really doesn’t matter so long as the shipper knows who will be there to release or receive the vehicle.

Despite being located in a rather unfriendly area for auto transporters, Providence, Rhode Island sees a surprisingly high amount of car transport traffic. Of course, most of it is running into or out of Boston, but as Providence sits just along I-95, the main link into Boston, it’s typically going to be a bit cheaper and quicker to book auto transportation to or from the city.

Cities along major interstates, like Eugene and Portland, will typically be easier to ship to or from than those off the beaten path, as it were. Auto shippers use the interstates to get to and from just about everywhere in the country and charge less to ship to or from areas along major interstates.

The Express 1500 Passenger Van is a full-size van designed to haul up to eight people comfortably. Though designed more for companies and other group gatherings, it is still a fairly popular vehicle for people in all walks of life, and as such is a fairly common vehicle to see on the back of an auto transport truck.

Having a move-in box – one that has all your essentials you’ll need before unpacking anything else at your new home – will help tremendously when it comes to making your move easier. Things like phone chargers, small electronics, toiletries and the like – that’s what you’ll need when you first open your new home, before anything else.

Shipping a vehicle depends very much on the route that you are shipping along. Quicker routes will take less time and cost less than shipments of thousands of miles. Most routes, even the longest in the country, will also only take a maximum of two-three weeks.

You will not need any proof of ownership of a vehicle you are shipping. Title and registration should be kept separate from any vehicle you ship, as it could get lost or stolen en route from pickup to delivery. Keep your important vehicle documents safe and secure and on your person or somewhere safe.

Please don’t put any more than 100 pounds of stuff into your vehicle before transport. Auto shippers are not licensed to carry any household goods and can get in trouble if they are caught with vehicles containing household goods at a weigh station.

Pennsylvania is one of the more popular auto transport locations in the U.S., particularly Philadelphia. Central Pennsylvania is a bit more expensive to ship to than the borders due to Pittsburgh being on the western end and Philadelphia on the eastern. Keep this in mind for the best rates to and from Pennsylvania.

Transporting a vehicle to a rural area will likely cost more and take longer than shipping to a major metro area. Areas such as Canton, Illinois have no major interstates connecting them to the rest of the country, and that means more travel time for less pay for auto shippers – unless they charge more.

Shipping a Mazda 6 should not be any more difficult than any other mid-size sedan. The Mazda 6 is not overly long, large or heavy, and is built on the same platform as the 626, which means most shippers will be familiar with its size and overall configuration.

Auto transport companies like taking holidays off. Typically they’ll plan their holiday schedules to take them closer to home, particularly around Thanksgiving and Christmas, when family is considered most important. Keep that in mind when shipping during the holiday season, as you may see higher prices as a result.

Hurricane season brings a lot of nasty weather to the Gulf Coast region of the U.S., and that can cause serious price hikes and delays throughout the region. From August to November you’ll be best off following the news and making sure no hurricanes are coming in from the Gulf before you ship there.

Understanding your shipping routes is a great way to get some inside information on the auto transport industry. Popular routes are those that run to and from major metro areas, usually cities with over 500,000 residents, and also areas that are not prone to severe weather during certain times of the year (like winter).

Flatbed transportation is the most expensive form of shipping a vehicle but is worth it if your vehicle is too large to ship on a standard open or enclosed transport truck. Of course, if it doesn’t fit on a standard carrier, it’s going to need flatbed shipping regardless of price, so keep that in mind.

Oregon may be isolated in the Pacific Northwest, but its major metro areas are all grouped close together. This makes it more likely a carrier will run routes to or from those areas, which will help lower transportation prices to and from Oregon.

Allentown is located in a popular car transport location within the state of Pennsylvania. Despite its slammer size, its location makes it more popular than other cities its size that are located in the middle of nowhere. This is a great example of how geography can impact auto transportation prices.

When shipping a hot rod, make sure to talk to your representative about what type of shipping carrier is best for your vehicle. Enclosed is more expensive, but provides more protection from the elements than open transport, so keep that in mind.

Make sure that you make a list of your items that you pack when you’re preparing to ship your household goods. Knowing what items you’re shipping and having them inventoried will give you more peace of mind and more control over what is – and isn’t – transported to your new home.

Overseas shipping is more expensive than shipping within the contiguous U.S. because a second shipping company has to be used. Usually your representative will take your payment in full up front, in order to pay for the services that the different shippers provide.

Make sure that you talk to your auto transport carrier if you are concerned about the potential routes that he may take from pickup to delivery. This will give you a better idea of where he is going and how long it will take to get your vehicle delivered to you.

Pickup windows are generally 1-7 days from the day you book your order. However, pickup windows are not any sort of guarantee; depending on other factors such as the time of year, your pickup and delivery locations, and even what you’re shipping, your pickup window could be more than seven days. Talk to your representative if you have concerns about your vehicle being picked up by a specific time.

Oklahoma isn’t a popular transport location, but I-40 is one of the most heavily used interstate highways in the country for freight transport, and it runs right through the center of the state, including Oklahoma City. This actually helps keep prices to or from the state more competitive.

Though most people do not think of Jacksonville being a major city, it is the largest in the state of Florida and the 12th-largest in the U.S. This makes it a popular auto transport location, as does the fact that two major interstates run right through the city.

Overseas auto transport is expensive and time-consuming, and you aren’t allowed to transport anything in your vehicle that is not part of your vehicle. Things such as linens and clothes – things normally reserved for the trunk during overland transport – are forbidden under international law, which is something shippers are much more strict about following.

Major metro areas like New York and Chicago can be hard for moving companies to get into and out of, so they usually hire inter-city movers to relocate your goods from a terminal at delivery to your home in the city proper.

Chances are, when it comes to shipping a vehicle, you likely have some misconceptions about how it works. Whether it’s regarding payment methods or transit time or pickup windows, if you are unclear about a portion of the shipment, feel free to ask. You can call us toll-free to speak to a live agent who can answer all your questions.

Be nice to your auto transport representative. They juggle a lot of different customers and their jobs are anything but easy. They work hard to make sure your shipment goes well, but many times problems arise that they have little to no control over. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Make sure you’re fully aware of how long it’s going to take to get your vehicle shipped. You should plan on 1-7 days from booking to pickup, and another 10-14 days for cross-country transit. Ask your representative for more on auto transport transit times.

The state of Ohio sees a lot of auto transport traffic due to its heavy urbanization. Cities such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Columbus and Cleveland are all popular transportation locations, even in industries unrelated to car transportation, due to the number of interstates as well as people.

Cincinnati is the third-largest city in the state of Ohio. Though it is not the largest city in the state it is still one of the more popular cities in the region, as most Americans are just a day’s drive away.

States like Arizona and New Mexico may be in the same region as Wyoming and Utah, but that doesn’t mean they’re priced the same. Pricing is based on how easy it is for shippers to get to and from your pickup and delivery locations as well as those areas’ geographic locations. The harder an area is to get to or from, the more expensive it’ll be to ship to or from there.

Getting multiple quotes to ship your household goods is a great way to compare prices and ultimately save money on your next household goods move. That’s why we can get you up to six free household moving quotes if you fill out our free online quote form.

You want to make sure that your vehicle is properly protected based on how much it’s worth. A junker – even a classic one – won’t need to be shipped enclosed. Neither will a project car. However, a freshly-restored muscle car from forty years ago will probably need some additional protection.

Transit time will vary based on where you are shipping from and to. Cross-country transport, on average, takes 10-14 days, and a good metric is to average 350 miles per day – that’s about how far transport trucks can drive. So, for a 3,000 mile trek, it’ll take about ten days, depending on the route.

Auto transport insurance comes in two pieces, liability and cargo. Both are required by law, but what liability covers and what cargo covers are two different things. Speak to your shipping company for the full lowdown on auto transport insurance.

New York State is beautiful, but it can be difficult to ship to if you’re not going to New York City. Upstate and western New York State typically see the highest prices and delays, as they are not areas that are heavily populated or popular with car shippers.

Transportation prices can change quickly depending on gas prices and weather systems in different areas. Summer shipping may be more expensive due to higher demand, but winter shipping can take longer due to fewer carriers on the road and fewer accessible routes.

The Northwest Mountain States are really hard for most shippers to get to or from considering how high their elevation is and how barren and sparsely populated the whole region is.

If you can get wheels and tires on your vehicle before shipping, you’re going to save yourself a lot of money. Vehicles without wheels have a really hard time being loaded or unloaded from an auto transport truck, so keep that in mind – and the wheels on – before shipping your vehicle.

You can cut down on your household moving costs by having a garage sale and donating old things you no longer want prior to your shipment. This will cut down on weight and packing materials, and save you money on both.

Make sure to talk to your shipping companies about their accepted payment methods. Not all will take all the same types of payment, particularly checks by phone and the like, so make sure you discuss with them the different ways you can pay for your car shipment.

Transit time is different from your pickup window. Transit time is how long it will take your vehicle to get from the pickup to the destination, as opposed to how long you’re going to wait to have your vehicle picked up. Transit time varies by route so talk to your shipper regarding where you are shipping from or to and what the transit time on your route will be.

A pickup window is how long it will take your vehicle to physically be picked up and loaded onto a carrier. Pickup windows are given after you book your order with your shipper, and are used to give you an estimated time of arrival for your shipper. Once your shipper is in your area they will schedule a concrete time and place to meet you to pick your vehicle up.

Make sure your vehicle brakes before getting quotes to transport it. If it doesn’t brake or steer, let your auto transport representative know before you book your order, as special tools and techniques will be needed to load and unload your vehicle.

Don’t forget to make sure all your important documents or anything else that is important is out of the vehicle you are shipping before it is shipped. Though it’s rare, total loss of a vehicle has been known to happen on an auto transport truck, and things such as break ins of vehicles on the truck are not unheard of either. Not trying to scare you, just giving you fair warning that things like that have been known to happen.

Don’t leave any personal items in your vehicle while it is being transported. If you must put some in the vehicle, make sure they are stored safely in the trunk. Do not leave any items, not even change, in the cab of the vehicle during transport.

Population density of a city or state is a good general indicator of that area’s auto transport popularity. Areas such as Florida and New Jersey are cheaper to ship to and from due to their high population densities; states such as Nevada, or rural towns in bigger states, are generally more expensive due to their lack of major population centers.

Please remember that illegal substances are not allowed to be carried across state lines, and there are things that you are not allowed to put in a vehicle during transport. Drugs and firearms are two big no-no’s, by the way.

Auto transport carriers only take cash, cashier’s check or money order as forms of payment upon delivery. Personal checks are not taken as they generally have no bank in the area and they have no credit car processing capabilities.

Paying a deposit up front, either when you book or when your vehicle is dispatched, is a common payment method that brokers use. Paying in full is different; be wary of companies that make you pay the entire balance up front. But many times you will need to a pay a deposit upon booking to get your vehicle shipped.

Delays are a natural part of the car shipping industry. Auto shippers get stuck in traffic often due to how far they travel and the number of areas they go through every day, so make sure to communicate with your auto shipping representative so you’re not thinking one thing when something else is really going on.

When shipping to Alaska or Hawaii your broker will contract with not just a carrier but also a port shipper. This is often why overseas shipments require payment in full up-front, so the broker has the funds available to pay for all aspects of your shipment.

Auto transportation services to or from Alaska will have to be done via overseas transportation services. No auto transporters will run a route through Canada proper.

Remember that things like guns, flammable materials, bullets, knives and the like – lethal weapons or things that could become lethal weapons – are not allowed in a vehicle being transported across interstate lines.

You don’t need to wash your vehicle before you transport it. In fact, it’s recommended you don’t, as the extra layer of dirt and grime will protect your vehicle from many minor dings, dents and scratches that happen often when a vehicle is out on the open road.

California is the busiest state in the Union for auto transporters. Home to over 38 million residents, California has more people shipping vehicles in and out of it than anywhere else. During the summer months prices can skyrocket for services out of California, but it is generally one of the cheapest states for auto transport services.

Maine is one of the hardest areas for auto transporters to get to or from. You should expect higher prices and longer pickup windows for shipments both to and from the most northeastern state in the country.

Florida is one of the most popular auto transport locations in the country. Areas such as Miami, Orlando and Tampa see some of the highest amounts of auto shipments into and out of them in the entire country. You can get great deals for Florida auto transport services at almost any time of the year.

States like North Dakota and Wyoming typically take longer to ship to or from, and are generally more expensive to ship to or from, due to the fact that they are sparsely populated with few major metro areas within them.

If your vehicle does not have a trunk, chances are you will not be able to pack any household goods inside it. As auto transporters are not licensed to carry household goods, if there are any goods in the cab you will likely be asked to remove them before your vehicle is shipped.

February is one of the slowest months of the year in the auto transport industry. This can negatively affect shipping services on even the most popular routes due to lack of demand. Keep this in mind when shipping during the month, as you may see higher prices and longer wait times for pickup or delivery.

Flatbed transportation is best reserved for vehicles that are too large to fit on a standard carrier. If you have a vehicle that you feel needs flatbed transportation, give one of our auto transport agents a call to discuss it with them.

Winter shipping to areas such as Florida and the U.S. Southwest is generally cheaper than shipping to areas in the north. Snowstorms and the like can cause delays and price hikes for transport to and from affected areas, so keep that in mind when planning your next auto transportation.

Terminal to terminal auto transport is a dying part of the car shipping industry. It is generally only available in major cities, but some companies don’t do it anymore. Be sure to call and ask us about terminal to terminal shipping if you are interested in that particular service.

Please make sure you have no sentimental or valuable items in your vehicle when you’re shipping it. Valuable items can be damaged during transport, or worse, so take a bit and make sure your car is completely clean of anything, including valuable or sentimental items.

It is best to have the full year, make and model of your vehicle on-hand when filling out our free online quote form. Having the vehicle’s specific information will gather you more accurate quotes and will save you a lot of time down the road.

Make sure you leave no sentimental items or valuables in your vehicle during transport. This is for several reasons: one, it won’t be insured by the carrier’s insurance if you do, and two, it could possibly get stolen if it’s sitting there in broad daylight. Carriers keep tight control of the keys, but if your ten grand Rolex watch is sitting on the dash for anyone to see, all it takes is a quick breaking-and-entering to snatch it. This is also a big reason why the cab of your vehicle should be completely clean of anything, but particularly valuables.

Before submitting any information through our forms please verify your information and make sure that it is correct, particularly your contact information. If you are searching for free car shipping quotes you should make sure your contact information is correct, because if it is not you will not receive any quotes. Though the standard form does not really require any valid e-mails or telephone numbers, putting in fake information will only waste your time, our time, and roughly ten different transport companies’ time as well. So please, if you submit your information through our form to get free quotes, take a few seconds and just make sure you didn’t make a typo somewhere and save yourself a lot of hassle down the road.

When filling out our free auto transport quote request form please note that the form only needs a city and state OR a zip code. Full addresses will not work in any of the forms on our website as they are not required at this point. When you submit your information via our quote request form you’ll receive ten free quotes from reputable and reliable shippers. Whichever you book your order with will need specific pickup and delivery zip codes, but so long as the cities you entered on our form match the addresses you give your shipping company, the prices will not change at all. Keep that in mind, and when filling out our form zip codes really do work best.

Please let your representative know about any special requirements your vehicle may require in terms of transportation as well as any modifications that may have been made to the vehicle. Lift kits, extenders, etc. can alter the dimensions of the vehicle, which in turn can make it more difficult to find the appropriate auto transportation carrier for your specific vehicle. Communication with your representative is paramount, so make sure to be open and forthcoming about the vehicle you are shipping so there are no problems – such as booking a carrier that can’t transport your vehicle – down the road.

Auto transport by rail is a dying part of the industry. As such, there are far fewer routes available for auto transport by rail than there are for auto transport via overland transport truck. This can make it difficult when trying to find alternative methods to transport via truck, but you should know that not only is transport by rail only available on select routes, the nature of the auto transport industry today necessitates higher prices for transport via train in order to stay competitive.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s important that you understand the intricacies of the auto transportation industry when you’re transporting your vehicle, but you can’t get the inside scoop on how things work unless you do some research. This includes reading blog posts and FAQ pages on transportation websites and also calling around to ask questions. Asking questions pertaining to your shipment to four or five different companies is often a great idea. You get an idea of who’s easy to talk to and who knows what they’re talking about as opposed to who’s blowing smoke and can’t really help you. And this helps you a lot more than you may think.

Make sure you know exactly what you’re shipping before you start looking around for quotes. A GMC Yukon is different – and smaller – than a GMC Yukon Denali XL, just like a Ford F-250 is different from a Ford F-350 Duly 4×4. Most vehicles are considered standard, but for larger vehicles – like SUV’s and pickup trucks – you may need the dimensions of it in order to get an accurate quote. At the very least have the exact year, make and model – as well as submodel – for any pickup trucks or SUV’s.

Be sure to give your transportation company plenty of time to find a carrier for you. Depending on where you’re shipping from and to it could take a week or more to find an auto transport carrier that is able to transport your vehicle. Carriers take the highest-paying loads on a route first, and some routes can get crowded with loads and few carriers which can up the pickup window beyond normal levels. Be understanding when talking to your representative and you should be able to weather the storm without any problems.

Don’t double-book any orders. If you book an order with an auto transport company, until you cancel it is unwise to try to find another company to transport your vehicle and see which one gets there first. This is a strategy many new customers use, but usually it backfires because everyone in the industry uses the same load board, can see the same vehicles coming from the same cities. Roughly 90% of all auto transport companies use the nationwide load board, so if you double-book you’re only causing yourself problems because it’s going to be the same almost anywhere you go.

When transporting a car you never want to book with the absolute lowest bidder. Brokers may help regulate prices, but they don’t control it; when they send you a quote that’s what they’re guessing your shipment will cost. But the thing is that when they start searching for a carrier, if your quoted price is too low compared to other loads your vehicle won’t move. This is why we recommend against shipping with the company that gives you the lowest bid. Sure, you pay less, but you wind up paying more in time for the service to be completed, and sometimes it doesn’t ever happen because the price is too low. In the auto transport industry, price is king.

Enclosed transportation is best used for vehicles that are rare, valuable or quite expensive. Generally enclosed transportation is more expensive, in part because of the cargo but also because enclosed shippers are not as common on the road and are not considered a standard method of transportation. Also, fewer people ship enclosed because of the additional expense, which sort of acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy. But it’s worth it, on the whole, so long that your vehicle is as well.

Open transportation is considered the standard method of transportation in the industry today. Open carriers can haul anywhere from 3-10 cars, depending on the configuration of the carrier truck, and because of this they’re better able to maximize their loads and make the most off each load while still keeping prices for their customers down. It is cheaper and pickup windows are generally shorter for open transport services as opposed to enclosed or flatbed transportation.

Terminal to terminal shipping is a dying part of the auto transport industry. On the whole shippers prefer running door to door transportation routes like we mentioned in yesterday’s tip because they have more control and it’s generally more secure and reliable. But terminal shipping can be useful, particularly if you’re crunched for time and can’t wait around for a transport truck to pick your vehicle up. Instead, you can drop it off at a terminal and it can wait there while you do whatever it is you need to do. Unfortunately many shipping companies do not provide terminal shipping, as there are few terminals outside major metro areas and many carriers don’t like doing business with terminals.

Door to door auto transport is the process of transporting your vehicle from a pickup location of your choosing to another pickup location of your choosing, as opposed to shipping terminal-to-terminal which requires you to move your vehicle to a terminal where it will wait. Door to door shipping is preferable for most auto transport carriers today as it gives them much more control over the routes they choose and it is also safer for both you and the driver. Inspections upon pickup and delivery are required as well as signatures stating that the inspection was done and completed. Door to door car transportation is easily the most common and best method of auto transportation.

When shipping a vehicle it’s always best to clean out the cab of your vehicle prior to it being picked up by an auto transport truck. Trash doesn’t look good and can actually cause problems for auto transporters trying to load or unload your vehicle. Not only that but it’s also technically illegal, as trash could theoretically be considered a form of household goods and as such the carrier would not be licensed to haul them. This is why it is recommended you completely clean the cab of your vehicle – that includes driver and passenger seats and floors in both the front and the back. Clear your ash tray (if you have one and it’s full) and make sure that the glove compartment only has your vehicle’s pertinent information and there is no loose change anywhere.

When you’re out there searching for some auto transport quotes you should make sure that you have all your vehicle’s pertinent information on-hand and ready to give to your auto transport representative should they ask for it. Everyone will ask for the year, make and model of your vehicle, but there’s other important vehicle information that your auto transport representative is going to need. You should have the VIN number handy to give when your shipper asks for it, as well as the current mileage of your vehicle, its color, license plate number – really anything that will identify it as yours or at the very least the vehicle you need shipped.

Many people assume that they should ship their vehicle will a full tank of gas so that when it’s delivered they can immediately drive it away. This, however, is a terrible idea – gasoline weighs a lot, which means that a full tank of gas is going to weigh down a vehicle by quite a bit. You should only ever have a quarter of a tank of gas in your vehicle when it is picked up – this cuts down on weight, gives you enough fuel to get to a gas station upon delivery, and also prevents your carrier from joyriding in your car (we kid, they don’t do that. Usually.). If you’re putting stuff in your trunk (see the tips for 01/03/2014 and 01/04/2014) you really want to make sure you follow the quarter-tank rule as all that extra weight doesn’t give the shipper a lot of wiggle room when adding more vehicles, depending on what else is on the truck.

Auto transport carriers have a hard time transporting vehicles into and out of areas that are covered with snow and ice. Their trucks are huge and long and haul literally hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cargo that is completely exposed to the elements. Auto shippers know how precarious their position is, particularly open transport carriers, and as such they like to avoid areas that are going to be hard for them to get into or out of, areas that are known to be dangerous or hazardous, and areas that are known for snow and ice. Snow and ice can cause them to lose control of the car transport truck, which in turn means that they jeopardize all that cargo and all those vehicles they’re hauling. Expect higher prices and longer pickup times for pickup/delivery in snowy areas of the country.

Following up on yesterday’s tip of the day, if an auto transport carrier is caught with too much weight on their truck – and go over the weight maximums when they stop at mandated weigh stations – it can cause some serious problems for the shipper as well as for whoever caused the truck to go overweight. The most common reason for an auto transport truck to be overweight is people putting a lot of stuff in their vehicles. If this happens, the managers of the weigh station (usually they’re operated by federal tax dollars, but some are maintained by state highway authorities) will likely search every vehicle for any contraband, as it were, and chuck it out right there at the weigh station. Don’t let that happen to you.

Don’t pack too many things in the trunk of your car. While auto transporters typically don’t care if you put a few things in the trunk of your vehicle, most of them know enough to know they’d get in big trouble if they got caught with a car full of household goods. They aren’t licensed to carry any household items – this is something they take seriously, but since they can’t just rummage through a car they’re shipping many brokers let their customers know they can put some “junk in the trunk” as it were. Typically they’ll only let you have at most one hundred pounds of stuff in the trunk, but it’s probably better to just go with 50 pounds to be on the safe side. Too much can cause carriers to go overweight at a weigh station, which can cause major delays for you.

Believe it or not, you shouldn’t wash your car before it’s scheduled to be picked up. Dirt and grime on the body of a car can actually help protect it from the hazards of the road – i.e. things that can damage your vehicle that get kicked up from one of the other cars on the road. Auto transporters rely on the interstate highway, and any company that provides car transportation services understands that damage is something no one wants to deal with. Dirt and grime will also help protect your exterior paint from chipping, scratching or flaking due to something on the road. Car transportation services are not cheap, and with how much time it takes to transport a vehicle you want to make sure that your shipping experience is a good one.

Transporting a vehicle around the holidays can be a pretty stressful endeavor, all things considered. As Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s come around, auto shippers like to choose routes that are going to put them in the vicinity of their families or loved ones or even just their home towns, as they look to take a break from driving their huge truck across the country and take a few well-earned days off. When transporting your vehicle around the holidays you should definitely expect delays, and there are few trucks running during the major holidays like the ones previously mentioned, and don’t expect any pickup or delivery services on Christmas Day – some companies may, but generally they’re in the minority.
