Snowbird Auto Transport and How it Can Affect You
It’s that time of year again.
Every year, right around Labor Day, the auto transport industry’s customer base drops like a rock. The summer season is over – the busiest time of the year has, once again, come and gone, and only those intrepid souls who do this sort of thing year-round are still shipping freight for customers. The winter shipping season brings with it its own fair share of headaches, but more so for the companies trying to make a living shipping cars as opposed to the wallets of the customers that are hiring them. As demand goes down, the auto transport industry sees prices start to fall, since there are fewer loads to go around on the most popular routes and still a lot of trucks needing loads. Therefore, a lot of companies will run routes at lower rates, hoping to keep their trucks full of fuel and cargo while at the same time trying to undersell their competition.
Enter the snowbirds.
Snowbirds, simply put, are people that live in the southern states during the winter and the northern states during the summer. They come from all across the United States, but most tend to settle in two places: Florida and Arizona. Winter weather is cooler and more comfortable than the snow that comes with living up north, but by only staying in the south for six months, they’re able to avoid all the terrible heat and suffocating humidity that comes with summer temperatures in the south. Many of them ship to one of two places: the Phoenix metro area or the Miami metro area. Miami is one of the most popular auto transport locations regardless of the time of year, but especially so during the winter, and this can mean good deals for you if you’re shipping into or out of any city in the Miami metropolitan area. Phoenix is a little less popular during other times of the year, particularly the summer when temperatures are always in the triple digits (or so it seems), but winter shipping means lower prices since there are fewer customers, so Phoenix ends up getting added to the list of popular places that customers can save money shipping to.
Snowbirds can also raise pickup times, however, especially if you’re not a snowbird but you’re shipping along a route that’s frequently traveled by them. These routes include anywhere in New England down to Miami or Phoenix, as well as many places around the Great Lakes and some even come in from the Pacific Northwest or the northern states like North Dakota. New England to Miami is the most popular, of course, mainly because of Interstate 95, the main north-south corridor connecting most major cities on the east coast together. Auto shippers utilize this and other interstates to help cut down on travel time and costs, and many snowbirds are already located somewhere along the interstate. Snowbirds also tend to get good deals, since they’re pretty constant – snowbirds, regardless of whether you personally are shipping this year or not, are around every single year, giving auto shipping companies a good base of customers during the slowest time of the year for their industry.
Snowbirds tend to lower prices and decrease pickup wait times for the northeast and the southeast, as well as in and out of Arizona. Make sure to talk to a representative about shipping your vehicle, and the conditions on your route. Things such as carrier availability, popularity of a route, ease of access, and customer redundancy (i.e. how many people are also shipping to or from where you are) all factor into your total auto transport price, and getting it right can be tricky for some people. Make sure to talk to a live rep; don’t leave your auto transportation to chance and e-mail.
