Signs Your Auto Transport Company is Awesome

Carrier 13You hear horror stories all the time – people ship their car and it arrives damaged, or the company was a hassle to deal with, or they didn’t refund monies for two weeks, or something like that. We’ve all heard it before, and likely will again, and while the internet has been monumental in changing the auto transport industry for the better (you know, adding safeguards and security for customers, forcing companies to adapt or get left behind, putting an emphasis on quality and reliability in the industry, etc), there’s always going to be someone trying to pull the wool over someone else’s eyes. But the industry is now at a state where, if you find top auto transporters, you may not even know it – one of the many signs of an awesome auto transport company.

Top auto transporters talk to their customers. They place an emphasis on communication and honesty, because that rapport will carry into other aspects of the shipment as well. One of the most common signs of a top auto transport company is simply how well they communicate and relay information to you. Truth is important, and those companies that are sitting at the top of the chart know this and exploit this. That exploitation leads to you gaining a lot of knowledge about your shipment and what to expect when it comes time to transport your vehicle, so if you get on the phone with a representative and they’re telling you all these things you didn’t know, that’s a good sign right there.

Another sign that a company is not only legit but also that they’re probably a great company is if they take your deposit when the vehicle is picked up. The deposit price is the price that the broker charges you for their services, and is separate from the transit cost which is paid upon delivery of the vehicle. Your deposit doesn’t secure your spot on the truck, though, or anything like that; it’s literally what the broker needs to charge to stay in business. Their job is important – without them the auto transport industry likely wouldn’t be as efficient as it is today – but when they collect their money is a matter of principal and integrity. Some companies take it up front when you book; these are the companies best avoided because once they have your money they don’t want to give it back.

Some shippers will take payment when your vehicle is dispatched, or scheduled to be picked up (they mean the same thing). When a vehicle is dispatched it means that the carrier has scheduled it for pickup. Since carriers really don’t like having to alter schedules when they’re actively following them, they have all the incentive in the world to stick to their schedule and get your vehicle picked up when you want it. The best companies, however, will take your deposit only when the vehicle is loaded onto the carrier’s truck, along with proof that it’s in transit, so they don’t take any money until they actually do their job – this is what most employees are subjected to, and the broker is merely your employee when shipping your vehicle – though that doesn’t mean that they can make the impossible happen.

There are a lot of signs that a company is bad, and if those are lacking they’re probably a legit company, but there’s things to notice about great companies too that make them stand out in a crowd.
