The Rise of the Electric Vehicle in the United States

Hyundai Hydrogen 1Not too long ago, the state of California celebrated its 100,000th electric vehicle sold. Around the same time, the United States as a whole announced that 250,000 electric vehicles have been sold nationwide since 2010, when the first full-electric vehicles were made available to the public. Of course, leading the way are Chevrolet and Nissan, with their Volt and Leaf vehicles, respectively. More and more people are starting to turn their heads in regards to electric vehicles, and it’s starting to pay off. California may be the state with the most electric vehicle sales in the country right now, but is that going to last? Doubtful. Not long ago, an independent company called ChargePoint released information regarding the Top-10 cities in the U.S. with the most electric vehicles. Three California cities made that list, including San Francisco at number one, but that means that the other cities are not located in California. This in turn means that electric vehicles are becoming more popular nationwide, and the numbers are starting to add up.

Now, applying electric vehicle technology to a car is one thing, but there likely won’t be any applications to the auto transport industry, or at least not at first. Most industries are resistant to change; after all, if something’s not broke, you probably shouldn’t try to fix t. But given the exorbitant prices for diesel fuel and regular gasoline, auto shippers are looking for any way they can pay less at the pump, and electric vehicle technology seems to be a great way to go. We’ve discussed the issue before, namely the fact that Walmart has its sights set on an all-electric shipping fleet (though right now the entire thing is hardly out of the concept stage at this point). If the United States’ interstate shipping fleets changed from diesel power to electric power, the amount of money saved just on fuel costs would be absolutely staggering, and in an industry such as auto transportation, where every single dime counts, electric vehicle transport trucks could be one of the best things to ever happen to the industry.

Of course, this is all speculation, but what we do know is that the electric vehicle is on the rise in the United States, in a big way, and at this point it doesn’t seem like they’re going anywhere. Electric vehicles have wormed their way into the hearts and minds of the American people, and more and more people are turning to electric vehicles to solve their personal transportation problems. Auto shippers will likely climb on board, but anything requiring such an investment in time and money would like to see a more concrete future than something on the horizon, but it’s a great start.
