Prepare Your Car Before You Ship It
One of the most important things you can do is to prepare your car before you ship it. But preparing a car for shipping means more than just making sure that you and the carrier are on the same page when it comes to what car you’re shipping. This is important, of course – it’s why one of the first questions you get asked when you ship a car is the year, make and model of it. Some companies will also ask for things like the VIN number and the color of the car. This is to make sure that the vehicle the carrier is loading on to their truck is indeed the one that they are being tasked with shipping.
But there’s more to do to prepare your car before you ship it. Another big thing is to actually clean out the vehicle. You want to make sure that the interior of the vehicle is completely clean, removing all evidence that it’s actually owned by someone and not something like a rental. Clothes, garbage, even spare change needs to be picked up and removed prior to loading. The reason why is because carriers aren’t licensed to ship household items, and even scrap bits of paper could be construed as such. Is this a huge deal? No. Trash won’t impact your shipment, won’t add much weight to the vehicle and won’t damage your car if they shift. But it’s the principle of the matter – better to simply force everyone to clean their car before the carrier arrives so as not to deal with any hassles down the road.
Another way to prepare your car before you ship it is to only have a quarter of a tank of gas in your vehicle when the carrier arrives. They need enough fuel to load and unload the vehicle and you want to have enough to get to a refueling station after delivery. This isn’t too hard, though, as most carriers will need to meet you somewhere with a large parking lot, and many commercial centers that fit the bill will be at most a few miles away from a gas station. Fuel is heavy, and if every car a carrier shipped had a full tank it’d kill their already terrible fuel economy and likely push the truck overweight, which is a big problem.
