Mobile home movers may seem hard to find, but the opposite is actually more true than not. While it’s true that mobile homes are trickier to ship than your typical motorhome, they’re still able to be shipped. And we here at American Auto Shipping can help you get it done!
How mobile home movers move mobile homes
The heading can be a mouthful, but it’s important to understand how mobile homes are actually shipped. To start, we’re talking about, essentially, manufactured homes. For more information on moving a recreational vehicle or motorhome, visit our RV Shipping page for more.
Manufactured homes are built to be transported. They are constructed in a factory and then trucked to the destination, where they’re installed to be non-mobile. Some mobile home companies will remove the axles and wheels of the mobile home. Others may not. If yours has axles and wheels, that’s a good sign, and should help keep costs lower.
Regardless, mobile homes are typically moved via large trucks. You’ve likely seen them on the highway – many of them come with oversize load signs, and some may have escorts to ensure other motorists don’t get too close to the truck.
But that’s really the only way mobile homes are shipped within the United States – via truck. Naturally, this gets expensive, and we’ll talk more about pricing in the following sections.
How mobile home movers price their shipments
Mobile home shipments are based on a number of different factors. Where are you moving? How long is the trip? How big is your mobile home? These, and other factors such as having to purchase new licenses and permits, will impact your price.
Typically, though, local moves will cost between $5,000 and $8,000. Longer moves will depend on the distance between pickup and delivery. For long-distance shipments, five-digit prices are common. So make sure to budget accordingly!
Remember, mobile home moves require a lot of planning, special tools, and an entire crew to make sure it is transported safely. All of these factors will be included in the price you get to ship your mobile home.
Preparing for your mobile home move
There are several things that you can do to prepare for your mobile home shipment. Here’s a quick list:
Budget. Getting quotes and knowing what to expect in terms of price will help tremendously when it comes to budgeting properly.
Remove all non-secured items. We’re talking things like couches, dinette sets, beds – anything that isn’t nailed to the floor should be removed before you move your mobile home.
Secure all items. If you’re moving a mobile home you already live in, make sure anything that isn’t secured gets secured. Double check things like cabinets and drawers. Have fasteners or child locks installed on cabinets and drawers as well.
Make sure insurance is a go. One of the worst things that can happen is your mobile home is damaged during transport. Ensure that your mobile is properly insured before you move.
Check all utility connections. This is something your mover may have to do if you don’t know to do it. But checking utility connections will ensure that, once you’re at your destination, hooking up to utilities goes smoothly.
Remove any extra exterior items. Things such as awnings, satellite dishes, shutters, etc. can shake loose during transport and either get damaged or damage your mobile home. Any exterior items that might shake loose during transport should be removed and stored properly.
Check your lease! Something that many people fail to do is to make sure that they won’t incur any additional fees from the lot owner prior to moving. Make sure that everything regarding both your old and new lots are a go so you don’t end up paying more than you thought you’d have to.
