Interstate Closures Make Midwest Auto Transport Harder
Winter Storm Europa came over the holiday weekend, bringing with it lots of snow and ice for the Midwest. This is just the latest winter storm to rock the region and likely won’t be the last. But it has made Midwest auto transport services harder to find and complete for carriers.
Snow in North Dakota, particularly along I-94, has already reached 10 inches or more in some places. Some highways, including stretches of I-94, have actually been closed down due to the bad weather. This can and will lead to delays in pickup and delivery in the region.
Europa is the latest in a string of winter storms that have rocked the northern United States from Washington to Minnesota to New England. Snow and ice have paralyzed parts of the country, leaving many auto shipping carriers stranded or forced to divert to other routes.
How hard are Midwest auto transport services right now?
Well this depends on where your carrier is traveling. I-90 and I-94 are getting the brunt of the closures, it seems, as well as I-29. In fact, NDDOT has said that no travel is advised on most state highways and interstate highways as well.
This is a massive problem for the state. There is not a single road that does not have some kind of travel advisory on it, and the DOT is warning everyone. This includes truckers.
Luckily, there aren’t a lot of trucks in the Dakotas right now due to a lack of demand. In the past week only about five people have requested a quote to or from the state through American Auto Shipping. This means that there’s just not a lot of people going there.
So how drastic is it, really? Well, even though Midwest auto transport services aren’t in high demand right there, it will likely impact other routes.
We don’t have numbers for the trucks on the road right now, but I-94 and I-90 see a lot of traffic. It’s also one of the only east-west interstates through Minneapolis, which is a major car transport location. It’s not as popular now, but it also connects Minneapolis to Chicago, which is really popular.
What about other major cities in the Midwest?
Chicago hasn’t seen a ton of snow…yet. Mostly because Europa hasn’t hit them yet, according to Weather.com. There’s a warm front moving in front of the storm that’s bringing unusually warm weather to areas that are going to be hit by Europa. New England is going to get hit hard, it seems. But we just don’t know for sure.
