Indiana Shipping Trucks May See More Tolls
New tolls are expected to be implemented along I-90 and combined I-80 through Indiana come September. This could impact Indiana shipping trucks, and not just those of the auto transportation industry.
The toll increases will jump prices for Class 8 trucks and up from about $44 to over $60. The funds would be used to invest in the state’s railroads, airports, ship ports, walking trails, bike paths, broadband internet, and more. In other words, the tolls would help pay for infrastructure improvements statewide.
About the new tolls
The tolls would impact any shipper using a Class 3 truck or above. There’s a great breakdown of truck classes on Wikipedia, which we recommend you read. But basically, any medium-size truck, such as a Ram 3500, would need to pay the increased tolls.
Class 8 and up trucks would pay more, however. Class 8 and 9 are the classes that most semi-truck trailers fall into, including car shipping trucks.
The tolls are a one-time cost, meaning that you pay it when you get on and then you can go pretty much anywhere along the 157-mile stretch of road. The increase is lauded by the Indiana Motor Truck Association, but the American Trucking Association is against the increase. The ATA believes that any toll roads are bad for business and hurt both fleets and independent owner operators.
How this can impact Indiana shipping trucks
Combined I-80 and I-90 – also known as the Indiana Toll Road – is a vital part of most shipping routes through the state. But the increase could result in some companies avoiding that particular stretch of Indiana.
More importantly, however, it could tack on a bit of extra money to shipments to, from, and through that part of Indiana. Note that it’s not all of Indiana – just that one stretch of road, which already has tolls attached to it.
So it’s entirely possible that this won’t affect customers or trucking companies in any significant way. However, if there are price hikes for routes along that road, it’s not a far stretch to say that they could impact prices for customers as well. We’ll keep you informed of any changes to this as they arise.
