Household Moving Tips for the Holiday Shipping Season

Moving 6Now that Thanksgiving is past, it’s time for a lot of us to turn our attention to Christmas and the last big holiday of the year. Christmas, even more so than Thanksgiving, is a holiday meant to celebrate our loved ones – as well as helping out our retail-based economy here in the United States. But the spirit of giving is always high around this time of year, and as 2014 winds down it’s the time of year where the long-term procrastinators finally start getting things done – like finally packing for the big move. If you’re planning on moving yourself and/or your family to a new part of the country this holiday season, here are a few things that you should probably keep in mind.

For starters, many routes across the country tend to rise in price during the holiday season, but less because of the holidays and more because it’s winter, and household moving companies don’t like running routes through snow and ice. Household moving actually closely mirrors that of auto transportation in the sense of when the best times of year are to ship – summer may see higher prices into and out of some areas, but on the whole prices tend to be cheaper because there’s a lot more freight. During the winter months is the slow time for both industries, and for some areas that’s a good thing, particularly if you’re moving from and to major southern cities. But there are other places, particularly New England and the Great Lakes regions, that can cause nightmares for household movers during the winter months.

If you’re trying to get your stuff to your new location by Christmas, you’re going to need to book pretty much now if you haven’t already. Waiting too much longer will likely force your goods to stay on the truck – or even waiting for pickup – until after the new year. Household movers don’t do expedited long-distance shipments the way that auto transporters do; with so much more freight than just a car going onto the back of a truck, household shipping companies need to have time to prep their trucks and organize their schedules in such a way as to maximize their pickups and deliveries and choose the best and most profitable route to ship your goods on. Since it takes much longer for household movers to organize their schedules than auto transporters, the lead time is increased for you, so if you need household moving services completed by the end of 2014, you better start looking around for some moving companies.
