Fall Snowstorms Cause Colorado Vehicle Shipping Delays
Heavy snows in the Rocky Mountains have caused Colorado vehicle shipping delays and interstate highway closures. I-70 is still currently closed in some areas as of this writing, and more snow is likely to come.
Snow in October isn’t unheard of in the Rocky Mountains but this year’s October snowfall is causing significant problems. Downed trees and power lines are wreaking havoc on the area, closing roads and knocking out power to hundreds. 14 inches of snow was recorded at Vail Pass alone. Moderate to heavy snows are also expected in higher elevations in Montana and Utah.
Why these snowstorms are causing Colorado vehicle shipping delays
The biggest issue is the closure of passes through the Rocky Mountains, of which there are few. Not all of them are closed, but I-70 was closed between Vail and Copper Mountain yesterday. More closures are expected as well. Early snows like this are often wet and heavy, which can make roads a lot more slick than truckers are used to. This can cause slowdown through the mountains which can impact transit times for car transporters.
This snowstorm is also impacting other areas than the mountains. Valley locations are seeing snow as well, which is affecting local access roads and emergency services. On the whole, though, it shouldn’t impact car shipping services for too long. Pickup and delivery in those affected areas might be an issue in the short term.
Wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour have been recorded, which can result in snow drifts and reduced visibility for travelers. A travel advisory has been issued for the area.
How you can prepare for Colorado vehicle shipping delays
Really, there’s not much you can do right now. It’s not quite winter yet so most carriers are still running summer/fall routes across the United States including into and out of Colorado. As the weather worsens, however, those routes will likely shift further south as they tend to do.
Really, the best thing you can do to prepare yourself is to speak to your agent about potential routes your vehicle may travel along. If there’s the possibility of delay you can discuss possible alternatives, especially if you’re pressed for time. Colorado vehicle shipping services are fairly popular thanks to Denver, its capital and largest city. And right now most routes into Denver are still easy to travel, so car transportation to or from Denver won’t be affected all that much…right now, anyway.
Speak to an agent about your shipment. That’s really the best advice that we can give right now because each route is different and yours may or may not be affected by the fall snowstorms.
