How to Determine the Best Car Transport Method for You
The car transport industry is full of different shipping companies and transporters that offer the same basic services but in wildly different ways. If you follow our blog at all, you know that there are three basic types of car shipping carriers – open, enclosed and flatbed. Most of the time, cars and trucks are shipped on an open auto transport carrier, as they are the easiest to find and the quickest from A to B, but just because open shipping is the most prevalent doesn’t mean that it’s going to be the best for you. In this helpful blog post we’re going to discuss a bit about the options available to you and help you figure out which one is going to be best for your specific shipment.
Enclosed car transport services are typically reserved for vehicles that are too expensive or valuable to risk damaging with an open transport carrier. See, open carriers, if you didn’t know, literally keep their cargo areas open to the elements – hence the name. While this is definitely a good thing for those daily-drive vehicles that people ship every day, for collectible, rare or exotic vehicles treating them like any other car or truck is probably a detriment to their value. While vehicles don’t retain value very well, some do, and those are the vehicles that typically demand enclosed transportation. If the value of your vehicle is actively going up, instead of down (as is the case with almost every other vehicle on the road today), enclosed transportation will almost always be the best car transport method for you.
Flatbed car transport is the other method that we need to discuss, and it’s a bit different from open or enclosed shipping. The latter two are considered “on demand” transportation services in that you can actively request an open or enclosed truck regardless of what you’re shipping (which means yes, you can opt to pay extra to ship a near-junker on an enclosed carrier if you so choose). But flatbed transportation is used on an as-needed basis, with most vehicles being too large or heavy to fit on a standard carrier. Flatbed transportation is best for construction equipment or vehicles that are modified from stock to be larger or heavier. You’ll want to discuss this with your agent, however, as they will be able to give you the full scoop on which type of car transport carrier will be right for you.
