Can I Ship a Car with Standby Car Shipping?
Standby car shipping is one of those things that most people don’t use unless they absolutely need it. There are a few reasons as to why you may need it, and we’ll discuss that in the paragraphs below. But most of the time customers don’t want it mostly because it can take weeks to get a car picked up. When most people ship a car they’re shipping the car they drive every day. This in turn means that they can’t just go without their vehicle for weeks at a time…which standby car shipping sort of demands.
So how does standby car shipping work?
When you ship standby you basically say “I’m going to wait for a lower price than what’s available now.” So, if it costs, for example, $800 on your route normally, standby may be able to get it done for $500. However, this comes at the cost of quick pickup. Most standard shipments get picked up within a few days to a week. With standby car shipping you forego that quicker pickup window for one further out in the hopes a carrier will take it at a lower price. This doesn’t always work out the way you want it to, though. Sometimes the prices can actually go up on a route which makes standby shipping pretty much moot.
Most companies advise against standby shipping and we do too. On the whole, you’ll only really need standby shipping if you’re trying to transport a car you don’t really need. If there’s no pressure to get the vehicle out right away and your focus is on the price, standby car shipping may be the best way to go. However, you really should talk to your agent about it. They can give you additional details as different routes are going to have different standby services. Some may not have it available at all due to lack of demand. So talk to an agent and figure out the best move for your shipment.
