Worcester is a city in Massachusetts and is the second largest city in Massachusetts, after Boston, with a population of just over 175,000. It actually marks the western portion of the Boston-Worcester-Manchester Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area, with a total population of over one million. Worcester is known as “The Heart of the Commonwealth.”

It was first settled in 1673, and was a major center for revolutionary activity and revolt during the formative days of the American Revolution, and after the war industry boomed in the city.

During the Civil War, it was a major manufacturer of uniforms and weapons for the Union, and after the war continued to grow. Today, the city is known for its unique architecture and in 2006 the city passed a bill to demolish a 1,000,000 square foot area of downtown to make way for new stores and retail outlets.

The city lies in a mix between a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate, a situation that is normal throughout New England. Summers are warm and humid while winters are incredibly cold, windy and snowy. Summer temperatures rarely reach higher than 85 degrees, while lows can drop to around 65 or so; however, in the winter, temperatures reach no higher than the mid 40’s, and oftentimes lows are below freezing.
