Raleigh is a city in and the county seat of Wake County, North Carolina; it is also the state capital. It is the second most populous city in the state, after Charlotte, with a total population of over 380,000 residents, and it is a member of the Research Triangle (an area comprised of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill). It is a principal city of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary Combined Statistical Area, which has a total population of over 1.6 million residents.

The city of Raleigh was commissioned to be the state capital of North Carolina and in 1792 was declared not just the state capital, but the county seat of the newly formed Wake County.

Because it was declared the state capital the city grew rapidly in the 19th century and after the Civil War advanced education programs attracted many ex-slaves that had survived the war. Today the city is in the midst of an expansive urban renewal project.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 84 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 65 degrees overnight. During the winter months, highs top out around 48 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 28 degrees overnight. Snow and freezing rain are common in the winter months.
