Olympia is a city in and the county seat of Thurston County, Washington, and the city also serves as the capital of the state. As of the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 43,000, and the city currently serves as a major economic and cultural center of the surrounding region, despite its small size.

It was founded in the 1840’s when two men first surveyed the area and decided that it would be a good place to settle and start a town, mainly because of its proximity to the Puget Sound area. The name was chosen in 1851 and was one of the last stops on the Oregon Trail. The city is now more a college town than a state capital, though it still serves as the state’s primary source of politics.
It is a typical Washington city, with average temperatures hitting around 75 degrees during the summer during the day, with overnight lows often dropping to around 55 degrees. During the winter, however, temperatures drop to around 45 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 32 degrees overnight.
