Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city in the state of Oklahoma, and is also the county seat of Oklahoma County. The city is the 31st largest city in the United States, and as of the 2000 census had just over 537,000 people; the metropolitan area has well over 1 million, and the city extends beyond Oklahoma County and into Canadian, Cleveland and Pottawatomie counties.
The city was first founded in 1889 during the aftermath of the Oklahoma Land Run. At the end of one day, nearly 10,000 settlers had staked claims to land in what would eventually become downtown Oklahoma City. After a few days, the population doubled, and the city was on the fast track to incorporation. After the discovery of oil under the soil, Oklahoma City became a leading oil distributor; after World War II, the city continued to grow, and continues to grow to this day.
Oklahoma City lies in a temperate climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, but not as extreme as other regions. The average high temperature during the summer peaks around 90 degrees, while overnight lows hit around 70; during the winter months, highs can drop as low as 40 degrees, though average temperatures hover around 50. Lows during the winter drop to around 26 degrees in the heart of the season.
