Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri, with a population of just under 450,000. It also serves as the anchor city for the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which houses close to 750,000 residents and is the largest Metropolitan area anchored in Missouri and the second largest in the greater Missouri/Kansas area.
The Spanish took control of the region in 1763, but didn’t play a major role in settling the region; that responsibility fell to the United States, and a fort was established in 1833. The city was the site of a pivotal battle during the Civil War, where the Confederate army was soundly defeated at the Battle of Westport.
The city continued to grow rapidly after the war ended, with a focus on manufacturing. Political machines attempted to gain influence in the city, but to no avail, and after the Second World War the city sprawled out into the suburbs and today the city is in the midst of many separate urban renewal projects.
Temperatures in the city rarely get above ninety degrees in the summer, and lows rarely get below the mid 50’s, usually hovering around 60 or so. However, during the winter months, temperatures drop to around 40 degrees as a typical high, and lows extending as far down as the mid teens for much of the state.
