John City is a city in Carter, Sullivan and Washington Counties, though the majority of the city lies in Washington County. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the city’s population was over 55,000, and the city is currently a principal city of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of over 181,000 according to the 2000 US Census.

It was founded as a railroad station in 1856 and turned into a major rail hub for the entire southeastern part of the US. It was briefly renamed Haynesville during the American Civil War though it was changed back after the war ended, and it was a huge area for bootlegging during Prohibition.
