Fort Hood is a United States Army post outside of Killeen, Texas as well as a census-designated place in Bell County, Texas. This means that Fort Hood is not a city in its own right, but is large enough – or has a large enough population – to warrant being its own statistical entity in regards to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It is located roughly between Austin and Waco and the population of the fort, according to the official US Census conducted in 2000, was just over 33,000, though the 2010 U.S. Census put the fort’s population at 54,000. It was named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, a popular Confederate general who fought during the U.S. Civil War.

During World War II, testing ground was needed to test new tank destroyers developed to counter the German blitzkrieg, and Texas had land in abundance. 300 families had to move, however, to make room for the fort, and in 1942 the fort opened.

By the end of the war there were over 50,000 troops station at the base, and today the fort routinely participates in national and international disaster and peacekeeping efforts. Fort Hood today is home to the III Corps, First Army Division West, as well as the 1st Cavalry Division, the 36th Engineer Brigade, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, and the 41st Fires Brigade, among others.

During the summer months, average daily highs around the fort tend to reach into the low-to-mid 90’s during the day, though triple digit temperatures are not unheard of. Overnight lows tend to fall into the low 70’s during the summer months.

Average winter highs only reach into the low-to-mid 50’s, though higher temperatures have been recorded; nonetheless, overnight winter lows tend to reach around freezing, but it does not snow often around Fort Hood.
