Fayetteville, is a city located in the U.S. State of Arkansas. Home to over 58,000 people, the city is smaller than many of the major cities in southeastern Arkansas, though it does serve as the county seat for Washington County, and is currently the third largest in the state.

The city is well-known as a business-friendly city, and and is ranked 8th on Forbes’ “Top 10 Best Places in America for Businesses and Careers” as well as #7 on Kiplinger’s list of Best Cities to Live, Work and Play In. The city is also home to the University of Arkansas, the largest university in the state.

Founded in 1828, Fayetteville was named after General Lafayette, the famous French general who aided the colonists during the American Revolution. Incorporation as a city came in 1836, and Fayetteville continued to grow slowly yet steadily up through the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861.

Fayetteville was the site of several battles during the Civil War, including one between Union and Confederate forces fought at the present-day intersection of College Avenue and Dickson Street. After the war, the city continued to grow and after the construction of the University of Arkansas became a popular academic city in Arkansas. Today, the University of Arkansas is the largest university in the state and is a prominent force in the SEC.

Like many other typical cities in its region, Fayetteville is known for its hot summers and cold winters. It experiences all four seasons fairly equally, with winter bringing snow and summer bringing the sunshine. It can get hot in the summer, with temperatures peaking in the lower 90’s, and winter can be just as brutal, with temperatures reaching as low as 25 degrees in the thick of December.
