Columbia is a city in and the county seat of Richland County, South Carolina; it is also South Carolina’s state capital and its largest city. The city is the center of a steadily growing metro area with a current population of around 118,000; the greater Columbia Metropolitan Area, however, has a population of over 728,000.

The city was founded in 1786 at the behest of state senator John Lewis Gervais, who wished the name of the city be Columbia; the state senate of Carolina voted and it won over the name Washington 11-7.

The city grew tremendously quickly and leveled off during the Civil War, where it was influential in shaping Confederate politics and contributed greatly to the war effort. The city was decimated after the war (and after Sherman’s March to the Sea), though through the 20th century the city has become a powerhouse once again, and the population continues to grow.

The city lies in a humid subtropical climate zone, which is characterized by hot humid summers and mild, warm winters. Average highs during the summer months peak at around 88 degrees, while lows rarely drop below 70. During the winter temperatures cool slightly, with average highs peaking around 63 and lows dropping to around 40 degrees or so.
