Boise is the capital and most populous city in the state of Idaho, with a population just under 200,000. It’s the largest city between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Portland, Oregon, population-wise, and as such is the primary transportation, government, economic and cultural hub of the area where it resides.

The city was founded around Fort Boise, which itself was built sometime in the 1820\’s. The name has several different origins; one story states that the city was named after a Frenchman, overlooking the Boise River Valley, yelled, “Les Bois!” at the sight of it.

Other stories claim that it dates back even further, to some time before the founding of Fort Boise, when mountain men and fur trappers roamed the Pacific Northwest. Either way, the city was incorporated in 1864, and after the Civil War saw an economic and population boom until the Great Depression. Now, however, the city has been stated as being one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest.

Boise is in a semi-arid section of the Pacific Northwest, and as such its seasons are characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Average temperatures during the summer peak at around 80 degrees, with lows hitting around 53 degrees. During the winter things cool off a bit, with average highs hitting around 40 degrees and average lows hitting around 25 degrees.
