Bismarck is a city in and the county seat of Burleigh County, North Dakota; it is also the state capital. According to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 55,000 and after Fargo it is the largest city in the state. It is also home to the tallest building in North Dakota, standing at a whopping 19 stories.

It was founded in 1872 and was known as Edwinton until it was changed to Bismarck after a few years. It was named after German chancellor Otto von Bismarck and was changed to attract more German immigrants, though when gold was discovered the name change was rendered moot as thousands of prospectors flocked to the city. In 1883 it became the capital of the Dakota Territory and, in 1889, became the capital of the state of North Dakota.
