Washington, DC – also known officially as the District of Columbia (DC) – is the capital of the United States of America and is currently home to over 646,000 residents, putting it in the top-25 largest cities in the U.S. The District of Columbia is not part of any U.S. state, as its creation is authorized by the U.S. Constitution as a “federal district,” under direct jurisdiction of Congress, and the district has one non-voting representative in the House of Representatives and no formal representation in the Senate.

During the work week, the population of Washington, DC swells to over one million, as it is the home of all three branches of government of the United States, and the Washington, DC metropolitan area, home to over 5.8 million residents, is the seventh-largest in the nation.

Washington, DC was created in 1790 via the Residence Act, in compliance with the Constitution, which approved the construction of the capital along the Potomac River. George Washington, the first president of the United States, selected the area, and land from both Maryland and Virginia was ceded to the federal government for its construction, which began the following year.

Congress moved into the yet-incomplete Capitol Building in 1800. Over the years, Washington, DC has seen its ups and downs, particularly during the War of 1812 when the British razed many buildings, including the White House. During the American Civil War, Washington, DC saw a large influx of freed slaves and other residents, particularly from northern Virginia, looking to escape the fighting happening south of the capital.

During the 1960’s, Washington again saw destruction, this time at the hands of rioters after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr, and reconstruction would last until the 1990’s. This in particular put a large economic damper on the city that it has only recently begun to recover from.

During the summer months, average daily highs in the city reach into the mid-to-upper 80’s, though temperatures in the 90’s are not altogether uncommon.

Overnight summer lows tend to drop down into the upper 60’s and low 70’s, depending on the time of year. August tends to see the highest temperatures on average.

During the winter months, daily highs only reach into the mid 40’s, while overnight lows often drop down into freezing temperatures, particularly during December and January. Snow is also not uncommon, though it is less common than it was just fifty years ago.
