Auto Transport Tips: You Get What You Pay For

Auto Transport Tips: You Get What You Pay ForOftentimes, when you ship a vehicle, you end up getting what you pay for. Really, that’s the same in just about any industry, and really anything you buy – you know what you’re getting when you order a McDouble off the McDonald’s Value Menu, and you know exactly why that thing costs a dollar to begin with. With high quality comes a higher price, at least in most instances, and it’s also somewhat true when you are shipping a vehicle. Auto shippers need to price their shipments correctly in order to make enough money on the route to cover food, fuel, maintenance and all the other odds and ends they have to pay, and if a company isn’t charging the going rate it could be something fishy.

You seriously want to watch out for lowball prices, because lowball prices usually mean lowball services. As mentioned, car shippers need to make enough money on a route to justify running it in the first place, which means that they need to price their shipments accordingly. This in and of itself isn’t that hard to do – the real trouble comes from the fact that auto transporters are actively competing with each other, so in order to keep their trucks full and on the road and, you know, actually running and in business, is to try to cut their prices as low as possible to entice customers to book with them. And if you can’t tell, it’s a fine line.

When you’re searching for car shipping quotes, the most important thing that you can do is look at multiple quotes to get a good range of prices for your shipment. Each company is going to give a slightly different price, but they should all be grouped together within about a hundred dollar range. Quotes can vary by up to three hundred dollars – anything more should be a red flag, and you really should try to stick to prices that sit close together. Let’s give an example: you have eight quotes from eight different companies. The lowest is $300, the highest is $700, but most are about $400, give or take fifty bucks. The $300 price may get your vehicle shipped, but chances are it’s a lowball bid, one given in an effort to get lazy people to book before jacking up the price. It’s sketchy, borderline illegal, and most companies don’t lowball intentionally – honestly, most of the time a lowball price is an honest pricing mistake. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to get your vehicle shipped any faster.
