Auto Transport Tips: Why Specific Addresses Aren't As Important As You Think

To say that having the exact addresses of where you are shipping a vehicle from and to are not important is, of course, ludicrous – it’s important that your auto transporters – both the brokers and the carriers – understand where your vehicle is coming from and going to, particularly the carriers as they’re the ones that will ultimately have to meet with you for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. However, specific pickup and delivery addresses can only take you so far, particularly when shipping into or out of a major metropolitan area. Auto shippers typically drive large, ten-car haulers that are roughly 50-feet long and weight about 80,000 pounds. That’s quite a large truck to be trundling around a cul-de-sac or down the streets of Manhattan – in fact, auto transporters can’t even get into Manhattan or, indeed, most major downtown areas, whether due to local ordinance prohibiting large vehicles from entering the district or just the fact that maneuvering in such cramped conditions is nigh impossible.

In situations where auto transporters can’t meet their customers at the given address, they’re going to have to meet you somewhere else in the vicinity – typically they’ll choose large supermarket or strip mall parking lots, as they generally have ample space for a truck that size to maneuver safely. That’s one reason why specific addresses are only so helpful, as they give the shipper a good idea of where you want to meet, and then they can work from there to find a place where you both can meet. When giving addresses to your broker (typically when you book your order with a shipping company is when you’ll give specific addresses), be sure to tell them exactly where you ultimately want the vehicle to go to, whether it’s your house in the suburbs or your office downtown or your ranch in the middle of nowhere, and from there you and the carrier can agree on where specifically you can meet if they cannot access the given location.
