Auto Transport FAQ: Can I Ship a Motorhome?
Getting a quote to ship a motorhome – or quotes, if you’re doing things the right way – can be tricky. While there are plenty of companies that can get you quotes to ship a motorhome, actually moving the thing can take some time, and is usually going to cost a pretty penny. Most of the cost has to do with the fact that you can’t just put a motorhome on any type of carrier; they usually require flatbed transportation services, considering how large they are. Some may be too big for even a flatbed, which would require them to actually be towed instead of shipped, but that’s usually for really, really big motorhomes. Suffice it to say, most of your standard Bounders should be able to fit on a standard flatbed truck just fine.
But it’s going to be expensive, and a lot of that has to do with the weight of a motorhome and also its size. Carriers know all the ins and outs of shipping a lot of different types of vehicles, but even the smallest car is still going to weigh more than they can haul without having it impact their fuel economy. This means that, to ship a motorhome while still being able to make enough money on the route, carriers have to charge more because their fuel economy takes a dive when they’re shipping something as heavy as a motorhome or other recreational vehicle.
So when you ship a motorhome, the best thing we can say is to be flexible about your pricing. Rigidity is going to only cause problems down the line; at best, it’ll slow your shipment down a few days, but at worst it can cause your shipping company to completely cancel your order and be unable to find a carrier for your needs. This is why it’s also important to get multiple different quotes from different shippers -they’ll all have different pricing trees and structures for shipping a motorhome, as it’s such a subjective thing to try to transport and different companies know different carriers in different parts of the country.
